Carlos Alcaraz dominates Dimitrov to keep Indian Wells 'three-peat' hopes alive

Carlos Alcaraz moved one step closer to an Indian Wells title defense with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 victory over an exhausted Grigor Dimitrov on Wednesday, securing his spot in the quarter-finals. The Spanish world No. 3, aiming to become only the third man to win the tournament three times in a row after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, adapted far better to the blustery conditions than his opponent.
Dimitrov, the 14th seed, struggled to recover from a grueling three-hour third-round battle earlier in the week, allowing Alcaraz to dictate the match with ease. "Today with the conditions, it was really tough for us both. I had to survive," Alcaraz told the ATP Tour. "I'm very happy that I was able to play long rallies. I got a good rhythm, even with the conditions, so I'm just really happy to get through."
Alcaraz dominated the first set without facing a single break point, capitalizing on Dimitrov’s numerous unforced errors. The four-time Grand Slam champion continued his flawless performance in the second set, dropping just four first-serve points and saving all three break points he faced before sealing the win with a precision-placed forehand. Up next, he will take on Argentine Francisco Cerundolo in the quarter-finals.
Keys Extends Win Streak; Bencic Stuns Gauff
Australian Open champion Madison Keys continued her red-hot form, securing her 15th straight win with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-3 victory over 19th seed Donna Vekic. Despite losing the first set, Keys fought back in a tense second-set tiebreak, erasing a 5-3 deficit and sealing it with an unreturnable serve. "Sometimes after a close tiebreaker and winning the set, you can get almost a little bit too amped," Keys explained. "So I just wanted to try to play really tough the first game and just get back to doing the things I was doing well."
Keys carried that momentum into the third set, breaking Vekic early before closing out the match with a signature forehand winner to the delight of the home crowd. She will now face Swiss wildcard Belinda Bencic, who pulled off a surprise victory over third seed Coco Gauff, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Bencic completed her comeback by breaking Gauff from 0-40 down at 4-4 in the final set, securing the win on her first match point as the American sent a forehand long. "Obviously, this is why you are practicing and working hard all your life," Bencic said. "The way you cheered before the match ... I had chills and goosebumps."
Draper Ousts Fritz; Sabalenka Cruises
Britain’s Jack Draper reached the Indian Wells quarter-finals for the first time, delivering a 7-5, 6-4 upset over former champion Taylor Fritz. The U.S. Open semi-finalist was pleased with his performance, saying, "I played a really high-level match. I think I struggled here in the past with my serve, but I thought that I served great today, and I think that put a lot of pressure on him." Draper will now face 11th seed Ben Shelton, who advanced with a 7-6(6), 6-1 win over fellow American Brandon Nakashima.
Meanwhile, women's top seed Aryna Sabalenka showed her dominance with a routine 6-1, 6-2 victory over British lucky loser Sonay Kartal. The Belarusian will take on Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in the final eight as she continues her push for the Indian Wells title.
