Celta Vigo 0-1 Atletico Madrid: Julian Alvarez scores late to snatch victory for Atleti

Celta Vigo's winless run against Atlético Madrid extended to 12 matches following a late goal from Julián Álvarez, which secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Diego Simeone's team.

Celta had not achieved four consecutive league victories at home since December 2020, but they aimed for this unlikely feat as they took to the Balaídos pitch, aware that a win could elevate them into the top six.

Despite the fact that only La Liga powerhouses Barça and Real Madrid had outscored the Galicians prior to this match, Simeone's unbeaten side was determined to make the contest challenging, engaging in a fiercely physical battle.

Celta managed to create a few promising opportunities in the first half, with young talent Williot Swedberg missing the target just ten minutes into the game.

The next significant chance did not arise until the half-hour mark, when Sky Blues striker Iago Aspas sent a header soaring over the crossbar.

Aspas came closest to breaking the deadlock just before halftime, but Jan Oblak executed a remarkable save, diving low to his left to thwart him.

Before this match, no team had conceded fewer goals than Atlético in La Liga this season, yet Aspas, Swedberg, and newly acquired Borja Iglesias continued to apply pressure.

Unfazed by the situation, Simeone opted to introduce his own summer signing, Julián Álvarez, in an effort to invigorate a lackluster attack.

However, the substitution did not yield the expected results, as Oblak was soon called upon to make an excellent save from Iglesias' close-range header just minutes later.

A visibly frustrated Simeone made a tactical adjustment with a double substitution, which effectively opened up the match. Marcos Alonso was compelled to intervene as he skillfully guided Álvarez away from a through ball, just as the latter appeared poised to score.

The fatigued Atlético Madrid side had consistently struggled to maintain attacking momentum, yet they came close to netting a goal with ten minutes remaining when Rodrigo Riquelme’s low shot was expertly saved by Celta's goalkeeper, Vicente Guaita.

Despite their commendable performance throughout the match, Celta faced a harsh setback in the closing moments when Simeone's strategy finally paid off. Álvarez managed to redirect Antoine Griezmann’s exquisite inswinging cross into the net, igniting celebrations among the away supporters.

Atlético Madrid's unbeaten streak persists, and their Argentine manager will undoubtedly be pleased with the resilience displayed by his defense, particularly goalkeeper Oblak, who held firm before the decisive strike was made.
