Celtic 1-1 Club Brugge: Maeda stunner rescues point for Scottish Champions

Celtic and Club Brugge concluded their UEFA Champions League (UCL) League Phase encounter with an engaging 1-1 draw at Parkhead. This outcome leaves the Belgian side still seeking their first victory on Scottish soil, having previously recorded one draw and one loss in their earlier visits.

The significance of this match was paramount for both teams, as it marked their inaugural clash, with each side aware that securing three points could significantly enhance their chances of advancing to the UCL knockout rounds.

Despite playing at home, Celtic found themselves under pressure early on, as their Belgian opponents aggressively sought the opening goal.

Ferran Jutgla came close to scoring within the first five minutes, with a shot from the edge of the box that narrowly missed Kasper Schmeichel’s goal.

Brendan Rodgers’ team eventually overcame their sluggish start and began to mount a response, yet the visitors continued to press forward, with Andreas Skov Olsen next to attempt a shot, which he sent wide of the target.

Moments later, a moment of panic from Cameron Carter-Vickers led to an unfortunate own goal, as he attempted to pass back to Schmeichel without realizing his keeper's position, inadvertently giving Brugge the lead.

Celtic endeavored to equalize before halftime, but attempts from Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate were thwarted by Simon Mignolet, leaving the hosts trailing by one goal at the interval.

After failing to register a shot on target in the first half, Brugge aimed to extend their lead early in the second half, with Maxim De Cuyper shooting from the edge of the box, only to miss the target.

Celtic eventually found their equalizer when Alex Valle set up Daizen Maeda in the box, allowing the forward to skillfully cut back onto his right foot and fire the ball past Mignolet into the far side netting.

The two teams persisted in creating opportunities, yet neither was able to secure a victory. The draw proved advantageous for both sides, as Celtic maintained its position in 19th place in the standings. Conversely, the point earned by Brugge allowed them to ascend two positions to 22nd place.
