Celtic sack Wilfried Nancy after eight-game spell ends in crisis

Celtic have officially parted ways with head coach Wilfried Nancy after a turbulent and short-lived reign that lasted just over a month, following a dramatic collapse in form by the Scottish champions.

The decision was confirmed on Monday, less than 48 hours after Celtic’s 3–1 home defeat to Rangers, a result that sparked angry protests outside Celtic Park and proved to be the final blow for the Frenchman’s tenure.

Club statement confirms immediate exit

In a brief statement, Celtic announced the termination of Nancy’s contract with immediate effect.

“Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy with immediate effect,” the club said.

The statement also confirmed that Nancy’s coaching staff and head of football operations Paul Tisdale have departed the club as part of a wider reset behind the scenes.

Six defeats in eight games seal Nancy’s fate

Nancy leaves Celtic six points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts, although the club remains in second place. Despite their league position, performances under the 48-year-old deteriorated rapidly, with Celtic losing six of their eight matches during his brief spell in charge.

Saturday’s Old Firm defeat was the culmination of a disastrous run that included:

  • A 3–1 loss to St Mirren in the Scottish League Cup final
  • A 2–1 defeat at Dundee United
  • Losses away to Motherwell
  • A second-half collapse against Rangers at Celtic Park

The sequence marked the first time Celtic had lost four consecutive matches since 1978, a run that previously occurred under legendary manager Jock Stein.

Sharp contrast with O’Neill’s interim success

Nancy officially took charge on December 4, replacing interim boss Martin O’Neill, who had steadied the club after Brendan Rodgers resigned in October.

Under O’Neill’s caretaker spell, Celtic had won seven of eight matches, restoring confidence and momentum. That form quickly evaporated after Nancy’s arrival, with the former Columbus Crew coach becoming the first Celtic manager to lose his opening two competitive games.

Although brief league victories against Aberdeen and Livingston briefly eased pressure, subsequent defeats ensured the downturn could not be reversed.

High expectations after MLS success

Nancy was appointed on a two-and-a-half-year contract after concluding the MLS season with Columbus Crew, where he enjoyed considerable success.

His achievements in North America included:

  • Winning the MLS Cup in 2023
  • Lifting the Leagues Cup
  • Being named MLS Manager of the Year in 2024

However, his transition to Scottish football proved difficult, with tactical issues, defensive fragility, and declining confidence evident throughout his short spell at Celtic.

Paul Tisdale also removed in structural shake-up

Celtic also confirmed the departure of Paul Tisdale, who had served as head of football operations since October 2024. The former Exeter City and Stevenage manager was brought in as part of a restructuring effort but exits alongside Nancy as the club reassesses its football leadership.

What Next for Celtic?

With domestic pressure mounting and the title race tightening, Celtic are expected to move quickly to appoint an interim manager while identifying a long-term replacement capable of stabilising performances and restoring belief among supporters.

Nancy’s dismissal signals a decisive moment for the club as they attempt to halt their slide and reclaim momentum in the Scottish Premiership.
