Celtics hold off Mavericks to move one step closer to winning NBA title

The NBA finals took an intense turn as the Boston Celtics, led by their dynamic duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, managed to fend off a determined comeback from the Dallas Mavericks. The Celtics emerged victorious with a score of 106-99, securing a commanding 3-0 lead in the series.

Tatum, who had been struggling to find his scoring rhythm, exploded for 31 points in this crucial game. Brown, on the other hand, delivered a scorching performance in the third quarter, contributing 15 of his 30 points.

With their exceptional performances, the Celtics now find themselves just one win away from clinching their record-setting 18th NBA championship.

Currently tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most titles at 17, the Celtics have the opportunity to surpass this milestone in game four, which will be held in Dallas on Friday.

However, despite their strong position, Tatum emphasized that the team remains focused and determined, not allowing themselves to become complacent.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks face an uphill battle, fully aware that no team in NBA playoff history has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a series.

Despite their efforts to mount a comeback, the Mavericks fell short, with Luka Doncic fouling out and leaving the court frustrated. Doncic received his fifth and sixth fouls within a minute, leading to his departure from the game.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd challenged the fouls, but ultimately lost the appeal, leaving his team at a disadvantage.

Despite their resilience, the Mavericks were unable to overcome the Celtics' strong defense and offensive prowess. The Celtics maintained their composure and found answers to every challenge posed by the Mavericks.

As the game neared its conclusion, the Mavericks managed to narrow the deficit to just one point, thanks to Kyrie Irving's jump shot with 3:37 remaining.

However, the Celtics remained composed and executed crucial plays. Brown made a jump shot, and after Irving missed a difficult three-pointer, Derrick White and Tatum sealed the victory with successful free throws.

With this win, the Celtics extended their playoff winning streak to 10 games and maintained their unbeaten record on the road this postseason.

The stage is now set for an exciting game four, where the Celtics have the opportunity to secure their historic 18th NBA championship.

Brown expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, emphasizing the significance of the win. Despite facing some challenges, they maintained their composure and executed crucial plays when needed.

Irving, who had struggled in the previous games, stepped up and led the Mavericks with an impressive 35 points. Doncic also contributed with 27 points, six rebounds, and six assists before fouling out.

Doncic expressed his frustration with the officiating, highlighting the lack of physicality allowed in the game. However, he remained determined and refused to give up, emphasizing the importance of unity within the team.

Dallas took advantage of the absence of Kristaps Porzingis and dominated the paint in the first quarter. With Doncic and Irving leading the charge, they built a significant lead of 13 points.

Tatum acknowledged the strong start by Dallas, recognizing the expected intensity from the home team and their supportive crowd. He acknowledged the importance of the game and anticipated a competitive matchup.

However, the Celtics retaliated and seized control of the game within minutes into the second quarter, securing their first lead.

Throughout the period, the lead exchanged hands six times until the Mavericks ultimately emerged with a slim 51-50 lead at halftime.

Following the break, the Celtics displayed an explosive performance, sinking their first seven shots of the third quarter.

A remarkable block by White paved the way for a powerful dunk from Brown, propelling Boston to a commanding 71-61 lead midway through the period.

To further extend their dominance, White successfully banked in a three-pointer, and Brown executed a driving dunk, pushing the Celtics' lead to 85-70 as they entered the fourth quarter. The advantage continued to grow, reaching 91-70 before Dallas launched their late comeback.

"Regrettably, tonight we were unable to overcome the obstacles," Kidd expressed.
