Champions League last-16 draw: Real Madrid vs Manchester City headlines knockout stage

The knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League has delivered several high-profile clashes, with Real Madrid and Manchester City set to meet once again in what has become one of Europe’s defining rivalries.
The draw, conducted at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, also produced heavyweight encounters including Paris Saint‑Germain against Chelsea FC and Newcastle United facing FC Barcelona.
With six English clubs still involved, the Premier League maintains a strong presence in the tournament as teams begin their pursuit of the European crown. The first legs of the ties will be played on March 10–11, with the second legs scheduled for March 17–18.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City
Few fixtures in European football carry the same recent intensity as Real Madrid against Manchester City. This upcoming tie marks the fifth consecutive season the clubs have met in the Champions League knockout rounds, underlining the dominance both sides have exerted in continental football over the past decade.
Madrid, record 15-time European champions, secured their place in the last-16 after defeating Benfica 3-1 on aggregate in the knockout play-offs. City, champions in 2023 under Pep Guardiola, advanced directly after finishing inside the top eight of the league phase.

The rivalry has produced several unforgettable moments in recent years. Madrid eliminated City in the 2022 semi-finals and again in the 2024 quarter-finals on their way to lifting the trophy, while City famously overturned the Spanish giants in the 2023 semi-finals during their treble-winning campaign.
The first leg will take place at the Santiago Bernabéu before the decisive return fixture in England.

PSG vs Chelsea: European Champions face Premier League Giants
Another headline clash pits reigning champions Paris Saint‑Germain against Premier League side Chelsea FC. PSG reached this stage after a dramatic 5-4 aggregate victory over domestic rivals AS Monaco in the play-offs.
Chelsea progressed directly after finishing sixth during the league phase.
The clubs share a notable Champions League history. Between 2014 and 2016 they met three consecutive seasons in the knockout rounds, with Chelsea winning the first encounter before PSG advanced in the next two.
Their most recent meeting came in the Club World Cup final last July, where Chelsea defeated PSG 3-0.
Newcastle vs Barcelona
One of the most intriguing fixtures will see Newcastle United host FC Barcelona at St James’ Park in the opening leg. Barcelona already defeated Newcastle 2-1 at the same venue during the league phase earlier this season. For Newcastle, the matchup offers another opportunity to test themselves against European royalty as the club continues its resurgence on the continental stage.
Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham learn their Opponents
Several other Premier League clubs also discovered challenging routes through the knockout bracket. Liverpool FC will face Turkish champions Galatasaray SK in a rematch of their league-phase meeting earlier in the competition.
Arsenal FC were drawn against German champions Bayer Leverkusen.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur will face Spanish side Atlético Madrid in another tactically intriguing matchup. Elsewhere, Atalanta BC take on Bayern Munich, while Norwegian surprise package Bodø/Glimt meet Sporting CP.
