Champions League Matchday 5 Preview

Matchday 5 in the Champions League arrives with significant stakes for several teams.

Following Match Day 4, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Real Madrid, RB Leipzig, Real Sociedad, and Inter have solidified their spots in the round of 16. The upcoming matches provide an opportunity for Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, Atlético Madrid, Lazio, Barcelona, and Porto to secure their progress as well.

Manchester United, on the other hand, face potential elimination unless they secure a positive result in their away fixture against Galatasaray.

Group A:

  • Galatasaray vs. Manchester United: Manchester United, facing possible elimination, need a positive result against Galatasaray. Galatasaray is favored by the model with a 39% chance of winning, highlighting United's vulnerabilities in conceding late goals.

Group B:

  • Sevilla vs. PSV: Sevilla must win to stay in contention, but PSV's historical away struggles in Spain (one win in 18 games) could tilt the scales. A draw stands at 25.7%, highlighting the balance.
  • Arsenal vs. Lens: Arsenal, with a 72.5% win probability, can secure their progress with a victory against Lens, who have a limited European history against English teams.

Group C:

  • Bayern Munich vs. Copenhagen: Bayern Munich, with a staggering 76.3% win probability, are expected to cruise against Copenhagen. Copenhagen aims to build on their last win but face an uphill battle.
  • Real Madrid vs. Napoli: Napoli, under Walter Mazzarri, face a tough task against Real Madrid, needing a win (23.2% chance) or a draw (if Braga holds Union Berlin) to advance.

Group D:

  • Benfica vs. Inter Milan: Despite Benfica's struggles, Inter's visit is expected to be a close contest (25.8% chance of a draw). Inter aims to continue their winning streak, eyeing top place in the group.
  • Real Sociedad vs. Salzburg: Real Sociedad, riding high on 10 points, look to secure their lead against Salzburg, who face an uphill task with an 18.1% chance of winning.

Group E:

  • Celtic vs. Lazio: Celtic, winless in 14 Champions League matches, face Lazio, aiming for back-to-back wins for the first time since 2001. Lazio has a 62.1% chance, highlighting Celtic's struggles.
  • Feyenoord vs. Atlético Madrid: Feyenoord and Atlético clash in what's predicted as a tight game (25.3% chance of a draw), with Atlético eyeing progression and maintaining a record of never losing away to a Dutch side.

Group F:

  • Newcastle United vs. PSG: Newcastle, after a strong start, faces PSG needing at least a draw (22% probability) to avoid elimination. PSG aims to recover from recent losses in the competition.
  • AC Milan vs. Borussia Dortmund: Milan holds a slight edge (48.4%) against Dortmund, who struggle historically in away matches against Italian sides.

Group G:

  • Manchester City vs. RB Leipzig: Manchester City, already through, aims for top spot against Leipzig, where City holds a strong home record, favoring them at 70.2% to win.

Group H:

  • Barcelona vs. Porto: Barcelona aims to secure their place (64.5% probability) against Porto, maintaining a dominant record at home against Portuguese opposition.

Additionally, third place and a Europa League spot are up for grabs in Group G and H, with Union Berlin, Red Star Belgrade, Young Boys, and Lens battling for advancement.
