Champions League Playoffs: Atalanta’s late heroics, Real Madrid’s control, Newcastle’s statement and Bodo/Glimt’s fairytale

From Lazar Samardzic’s 98th-minute penalty in Bergamo to Bodo/Glimt’s stunning triumph at San Siro, the Champions League playoff round delivered chaos, composure and continental shocks as Europe’s last-16 lineup begins to take shape.

Atalanta 4-1 Borussia Dortmund (Agg: 4-3)

Samardzic’s last kick completes Italian comeback. Italian side Atalanta produced one of the most dramatic turnarounds of the playoff round, eliminating Borussia Dortmund with a 98th-minute penalty to win 4-3 on aggregate.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Atalanta tore into the contest from the opening whistle. The intensity was relentless and purposeful. Gianluca Scamacca struck early after defensive hesitation from Ramy Bensebaini, and Davide Zappacosta’s deflected effort erased the deficit before half-time.

The shift was tactical as much as emotional. Atalanta compressed Dortmund’s build-up lanes, forced turnovers in midfield and attacked the second phase aggressively. Mario Pasalic’s header put the hosts ahead in the tie before Karim Adeyemi’s brilliant solo effort briefly restored parity on aggregate.

Then came the defining moment. Deep into stoppage time, Bensebaini caught Nikola Krstovic with a high boot inside the box. After review, referee Jose Sanchez pointed to the spot and issued a second yellow card. With regular takers already substituted, Lazar Samardzic stepped forward and buried the penalty with authority.

Under Raffaele Palladino, Atalanta are unbeaten domestically in 2026, and this comeback reinforces their resurgence after a difficult start to the campaign. They now await either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the Round of 16. For Dortmund, finalists last season, the exit marks their earliest Champions League elimination since 2021-22.

Real Madrid 2-1 Benfica

Efficiency over emotion at the Bernabéu. At the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid handled business with typical European poise, defeating Benfica 2-1 to secure progression.

Rafa Silva stunned the home crowd in the 14th minute, briefly levelling the aggregate score and injecting tension into the tie. But Madrid responded almost immediately. Aurélien Tchouaméni struck from distance two minutes later, restoring control and calming the tempo.

In the second half, as Benfica pushed forward, spaces emerged. Vinícius Júnior exploited one of them clinically to seal qualification. The Spanish giants now await either Manchester City or Sporting CP in the next round, with the draw scheduled for Friday, February 27.

Madrid’s performance was not flamboyant. It was mature, controlled and decisive, a reminder of why they remain perennial contenders.

PSG 2-2 Monaco

Champions advance with composure

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 2–2 draw by AS Monaco, but did enough across the two legs to secure their place in the Round of 16. Monaco struck first through Maghnes Akliouche, but the turning point came when Mamadou Coulibaly received two yellow cards in quick succession.

PSG responded immediately through Marquinhos, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia sealed the tie after a parried effort from Achraf Hakimi. The holders now await either Chelsea FC or FC Barcelona in the next round, with the draw set to determine one of the standout ties of the Round of 16.

Juventus 3-2 Galatasaray (Agg: 5-7)

Osimhen and Yilmaz settle an epic

Galatasaray survived a dramatic comeback attempt from Juventus to reach their first Champions League Round of 16 since 2013-14. Trailing 5-2 from the first leg, Juventus fought back. Manuel Locatelli converted from the spot before Federico Gatti and Weston McKennie hauled the tie level at 5-5 on aggregate, despite Lloyd Kelly’s controversial red card reducing the hosts to 10 men.

But extra time belonged to Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian striker fired low past Mattia Perin after a clever pass from Baris Yilmaz, before Yilmaz himself sealed the tie on the break. Galatasaray will now meet either Liverpool or Tottenham in what promises to be another high-intensity contest.

Newcastle United 3-2 Qarabag (Agg: 9-3)

English depth on full display

Newcastle United completed a commanding aggregate victory over Qarabag FK to reach the last 16 with minimal turbulence. The tie was effectively settled in the first leg, where Newcastle raced into a 5-0 half-time lead. That cushion allowed manager Eddie Howe to rotate heavily in the return fixture.

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring from close range before Joelinton doubled the lead inside six minutes. Qarabag responded with spirit, Camilo Duran capitalised on defensive hesitation and Elvin Jafarguliyev converted after Aaron Ramsdale saved an initial penalty.

Sven Botman’s header ensured Newcastle maintained control, and the Magpies now join Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham in making England the most represented nation in the Round of 16. For Qarabag, the campaign ends with 30 goals conceded, a single-season Champions League record, but also with notable scalps earlier in the competition.

Inter 1-2 Bodo/Glimt (Agg: 2-5)

Norwegian fairytale grows at San Siro

The shock of the round came in Milan, where Bodo/Glimt stunned Inter Milan to reach the last 16 in their debut Champions League season. Holding a 3-1 first-leg advantage from the Arctic Circle, Bodo/Glimt absorbed early pressure before striking decisively. Jens Petter Hauge punished defensive confusion, and Hakon Evjen’s clinical finish sealed progression.

Inter managed only a late consolation through Alessandro Bastoni. More than 3,000 travelling supporters witnessed a landmark night for a club from a town of roughly 50,000 people. The result deepens concerns for Serie A’s continental competitiveness this season, with Italian representation hanging by a thread.

Round of 16 Outlook

The playoff round delivered everything European knockout football promises: tactical battles, late drama, red cards, and seismic upsets. England sends six teams forward. Spain’s giants remain steady. Norway writes a new chapter.

The draw now looms, and with potential clashes such as Arsenal vs Bayern, PSG vs Barcelona or Manchester City vs Real Madrid on the horizon, the tournament shifts from chaos to calculation.

If this week proved anything, it’s that momentum, not reputation, decides nights like these.
