Champions League: Union Berlin grab famous point at Napoli

In a Champions League clash that left fans on the edge of their seats, Union Berlin secured their first point in the competition, holding Napoli to a hard-fought draw. Napoli, eager to solidify their position in the knockout stage race, seemed poised to do so when Matteo Politano netted in the 39th minute.

However, Urs Fischer's Union Berlin had other plans. David Fofana, in a crucial moment, struck back with a 52nd-minute rebound goal, marking his first for Union Berlin since his loan move from Chelsea. This equalizer put an end to Union Berlin's 12-match losing streak and dealt a blow to the Italian champions' Champions League campaign.

Union Berlin, while still at the bottom of Group C, now stand six points behind Napoli, and their chances of reaching the last 16 remain uncertain. Nevertheless, the spirited performance brought joy to their devoted fans, who filled the away end at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after encountering challenges with the police and home supporters leading up to the match.

Union defender Leonardo Bonucci expressed the team's satisfaction with the result, stating, "We’ll take a very important point, but we can’t rest on our laurels. We conceded a really unfortunate goal… it kind of summed up what we’ve been going through. But we reacted really well as a team. We knew we could hit them on the break as Napoli play very open, and we were rewarded."

Napoli, on the other hand, missed an opportunity to take a significant step toward the knockout stage with a victory. Despite their dominance in the match, they struggled to break through Union Berlin's well-organized defense. As a result, Rudi Garcia's side now trails leaders Real Madrid by two points. However, Napoli maintains a strong position to qualify for the next round, sitting four points ahead of Braga in the group standings.
