Chelsea 0–1 Newcastle: Anthony Gordon goal boosts Magpies’ European push

Newcastle United revived their hopes of European qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The win marked Newcastle’s first triumph at Stamford Bridge since 2012, while piling further pressure on Chelsea following their heavy defeat in Europe earlier in the week.

A first-half strike from Anthony Gordon proved decisive in a match where Chelsea dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances.

Gordon goal punishes wasteful Chelsea

Newcastle struck in the 18th minute after a sharp attacking move. Tino Livramento threaded a clever pass through the Chelsea defence to release Joe Willock, who surged forward before squaring the ball to Gordon.

The winger calmly finished to give Newcastle an early lead.

Despite enjoying over 66% possession and firing 22 shots, Chelsea could not find a way past Newcastle’s disciplined defensive structure.

Chelsea pressure fails to produce equaliser

Chelsea pushed relentlessly for an equaliser during the second half. Defender Trevoh Chalobah came close with a header, while substitute Liam Delap also threatened in the air.

Club captain Reece James nearly produced a moment of brilliance with a trademark free kick that crashed against the post. However, Newcastle’s defence held firm to secure all three points.

Howe praises defensive discipline

After the final whistle, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised his side’s defensive effort following a demanding week.

He highlighted the team’s resilience and collective determination to protect their lead. According to Howe, Newcastle had struggled defensively earlier in the season, but this performance showed the team’s ability to respond under pressure.

Chelsea Manager remains positive despite defeat

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior admitted the result was frustrating but insisted there were positives in his team’s performance. He pointed out that Chelsea began the match strongly and created opportunities before conceding the decisive goal. However, once Newcastle took the lead, the momentum of the game shifted significantly.

The victory moves Newcastle to ninth place in the Premier League, just six points behind Chelsea, who currently occupy a European qualification spot. With eight matches remaining in the season, the race for continental places remains wide open.

Chelsea face huge challenge against PSG

Chelsea’s difficult week began with a heavy defeat to Paris Saint‑Germain in the UEFA Champions League. In the first leg at the Parc des Princes, PSG scored three times in the final 20 minutes to secure a 5–2 victory.

A costly mistake from goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen allowed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to regain possession before Vitinha chipped the stranded keeper. Kvaratskhelia then added two late goals to complete a dominant performance. Chelsea now face a daunting task in the second leg at Stamford Bridge, where they must overturn a three-goal deficit to stay in the competition.

What’s next for both clubs

Chelsea return to European action with the Champions League second leg against PSG at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Newcastle will shift their focus to another major test against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou as they continue their push for Champions League qualification.
