Chelsea 0-2 Manchester City: Champions begin title defence with routine victory

Manchester City commenced their title defense in the Premier League with an impressive 2-0 victory over Chelsea on the opening day, marking their 13th triumph in 14 season openers. This match was anticipated as the highlight of the Premier League's inaugural weekend.
The initial moments of the game were somewhat underwhelming, as both teams adjusted to the new season and found it challenging to generate scoring opportunities.
The reigning champions, City, quickly found their rhythm as they embarked on their pursuit of a fifth consecutive Premier League title. Their persistent pressure bore fruit midway through the first half when Erling Haaland skillfully outmaneuvered Marc Cucurella and maintained his composure to score on the opening matchday for the third consecutive season, delicately lifting the ball over the advancing Robert Sanchez.
Although Sanchez was beaten, his remarkable performance kept Enzo Maresca’s side in contention as the first half progressed, highlighted by a spectacular full stretch save that deflected Jeremy Doku’s shot over the crossbar.
As the first half drew to a close, Chelsea believed they had equalized when Nicolas Jackson found the net from close range after Ederson failed to hold onto Cole Palmer’s powerful shot. However, the assistant referee's flag intervened, alleviating the Brazilian's embarrassment.
Pep Guardiola responded to the initial scare by substituting Phil Foden at halftime; however, it was Erling Haaland who nearly increased their lead shortly after the interval, as his curling left-footed shot was deflected to safety by Sanchez.
The Chelsea goalkeeper soon found himself retrieving the ball from the net when Rico Lewis struck decisively from close range, capitalizing on a loose ball within the penalty area. Nevertheless, a foul committed by Haaland on Levi Colwill during the buildup meant that Manchester City's advantage remained precariously narrow.
In an effort to regain control of the match, Marseca introduced four of his many new signings, yet it was a familiar face who ultimately ensured Chelsea would leave empty-handed on the opening day. Mateo Kovacic surged forward from deep and unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box that proved too challenging for Sanchez to contain.
This result marked an ideal beginning to the season for Manchester City, while Chelsea continues to face uncertainties regarding their capabilities as they prepare for their UEFA Europa Conference League qualifier against Servette later in the week.
