Chelsea 1-0 Fulham: Palmer penalty helps Blues to nervy win over rivals

Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea managed to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge, marking their fifth triumph in London derbies out of 16 matches.
Chelsea's recent performances against Preston North End and Middlesbrough showcased the ups and downs of their season. While they had a convincing 4-0 victory in the FA Cup, their 1-0 loss in the League Cup semi-final highlighted their struggles with finishing.
Fortunately, their match against local rivals Fulham provided an opportunity for redemption and a chance to secure their third consecutive league win. Throughout the first half, Chelsea dominated the game, keeping Fulham on the defensive but failing to trouble Bernd Leno in goal.
Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja came close to scoring early on, with a shot and a header narrowly missing the target. Surprisingly, Fulham had the best chance of the half, with Dorde Petrovic making a crucial save to deny Harry Wilson's attempt.
As halftime approached, it seemed that both teams would go into the break on equal footing. However, a well-executed pass from Cole Palmer led to Raheem Sterling being fouled in the penalty area by Issa Diop. Referee Anthony Taylor had no choice but to award a penalty.
Palmer confidently stepped up and slotted the ball into the corner, scoring his ninth goal since joining Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer.
Following the break, Fulham intensified their efforts to find an equalizer, leading to a more open game. This allowed Chelsea to pose a threat on the counterattack.
However, both teams struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Raul Jimenez missed the target with a header, and Levi Colwill's attempt from the edge of the area went over the bar.
As the half progressed, Jimenez tested Petrović twice, but the Serbian goalkeeper made impressive saves on both occasions.
Chelsea came close to sealing the game when Gallagher's shot hit the outside of the post, and Leno made a good save to deny Noni Madueke's low drive. Ultimately, though, Chelsea's one goal was enough as they defended well in the final stages.
With this victory, Chelsea climbed to eighth place in the table and extended their unbeaten streak to 19 league home matches against Fulham.
On the other hand, Marco Silva's team sits comfortably in 13th place, eight points clear of the relegation zone. They now turn their attention to the second leg of their League Cup semi-final against Liverpool, following a 2-1 defeat in the first leg.
