Chelsea 1-0 Tottenham: Enzo Fernández header seals Chelsea's narrow 1-0 win over Spurs at Stamford Bridge

In a gritty London derby under the Stamford Bridge lights, Enzo Fernández delivered the decisive blow as Chelsea edged out Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to reclaim fourth place in the Premier League table. The Argentine’s powerful 50th-minute header proved enough to secure the win and hand Ange Postecoglou his fourth consecutive league defeat against the Blues—a first for any Spurs manager in the Premier League era.

From kickoff, Chelsea showed attacking intent, nearly finding the net within 60 seconds. A deflected clearance from Micky van de Ven nearly gifted Nicolas Jackson a chance, but the ball cannoned off the post, sparing Spurs an early setback.

Tottenham, however, looked shaky at the back. Marc Cucurella played in Malo Gusto, whose close-range shot found the side netting, and Jackson later spurned a golden opportunity inside the box, failing to test Guglielmo Vicario.

Chelsea dominated the first half but failed to convert their chances. On the other end, Jadon Sancho—on loan from Manchester United—nearly opened his Blues account with a curling cross, only for Vicario to tip it over in impressive fashion.

The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half. Cole Palmer, in fine creative form, floated in a precise cross that Fernández met with a thumping header, capitalizing on Tottenham’s lapse in defensive marking.

Chelsea nearly doubled their advantage when Moisés Caicedo volleyed in after a failed Spurs clearance, but VAR chalked off the goal due to an offside in the build-up—yet another reminder of how razor-thin margins shape modern football.

Tottenham thought they’d stolen an equalizer when Pape Matar Sarr’s long-range effort squirmed under Robert Sánchez, but VAR again intervened, penalizing Sarr for a foul on Caicedo just before the shot.

Despite a late flurry from Spurs, including Son Heung-min’s close-range effort brilliantly denied by Sánchez, Chelsea held firm to seal their 10th win in their last 13 Premier League meetings with their north London rivals.

The result underscores Chelsea’s resurgence under Enzo Maresca, while Postecoglou’s men slide deeper into mid-table mediocrity with their ninth away loss of the campaign. Only Leicester City (11) and Southampton (12) have fared worse on the road this season.
