Chelsea 1-2 Legia Warsaw: Chelsea edge into UEFA Conference League Semi-Finals despite home defeat to Legia Warsaw

Chelsea FC advanced to the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-finals with a 4-2 aggregate win over Legia Warsaw, despite a surprising 2-1 defeat at home in the second leg of the quarter-final tie on Thursday night.
After building a commanding 3-0 first-leg advantage in Poland, Enzo Maresca’s side were expected to cruise into the final four. However, the performance at Stamford Bridge left much to be desired, especially as Chelsea continue to battle for form in domestic competitions.
Legia Strike First, Chelsea Struggle Early
With discontent growing among supporters following a recent 2-2 Premier League draw against Ipswich, Maresca named a stronger-than-expected starting lineup. Cole Palmer, Reece James, Nicolas Jackson, and Marc Cucurella were all included from the start as Chelsea sought to bounce back.
Chelsea began the match brightly, with Palmer firing just wide before Legia goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic was called into action to deny both Christopher Nkunku and Palmer again in rapid succession.
However, it was Legia Warsaw who drew first blood. In the 10th minute, a defensive lapse saw Tomas Pekhart brought down in the box by goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, awarding the visitors a penalty. Pekhart converted the spot-kick, despite Jorgensen getting a glove on it, giving the Polish side hope.
Buoyed by the away goal and raucous support from traveling fans, Ryoya Morishita nearly doubled the lead minutes later, flashing a shot just past the far post.
Chelsea Equalize But Falter Again
Chelsea regrouped and eventually leveled the match around the 33rd minute through Marc Cucurella, who finished a low cross from close range. The Spaniard thought he had scored again moments later, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside after VAR review.
In the second half, Legia came out with renewed determination, and after Jorgensen parried a strong attempt from Claude Goncalves, Steve Kapuadi restored Legia's lead with a well-taken header from a corner kick.
Chelsea responded with late pressure. Substitute Jadon Sancho forced another fine save from Kovacevic, while Noni Madueke and Tyrique George both had goal-bound efforts cleared off the line. However, it wasn’t enough to rescue the result on the night.

Maresca: “We need to take the positives”
Despite the loss, Chelsea’s aggregate lead was enough to see them into the UEFA Conference League semi-finals, keeping alive hopes of European silverware this season.
“We need to take the positives,” Maresca said post-match. “We’re in the semi-finals. This group has the chance to do something special—something that’s never been done.”
Indeed, Chelsea remain in pursuit of becoming the first club to win all three active UEFA club competitions—the Champions League, Europa League, and the Conference League.
Legia Exit with Pride After Historic Victory
Though Legia Warsaw’s campaign ends here, they made history with their first-ever victory on English soil, a milestone that offers encouragement ahead of their domestic season run-in.
“It’s bittersweet,” Legia captain Tomas Pekhart said. “We’re out, but we’ve shown we can compete with Europe’s best.”
What’s Next?
Chelsea now turn their focus to the UEFA Conference League semi-final, where they’ll meet the winner of the Lille vs. Fiorentina tie. Domestically, they sit just one point shy of fifth place in the Premier League, keeping alive their chances of Champions League qualification for the 2025/26 season.
