Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Neto on target as Blues come from behind to defeat Hammers

Chelsea staged a comeback to secure a 2-1 victory against Graham Potter’s West Ham United, marking a notable statistic: no former Chelsea manager has ever triumphed in a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge upon their return, with a record of eight draws and fifteen losses.
In search of a much-needed positive outcome after winning only once in their last seven Premier League matches (three draws and three losses), Chelsea dominated the early stages of the first half. However, their build-up play often lacked the necessary intensity.
There were moments of promise, particularly from Noni Madueke, who narrowly missed the far post with a curling effort fifteen minutes in. Shortly after the half-hour mark, he set up Enzo Fernandez, whose shot also went off-target.
As the half progressed, Madueke assisted Jadon Sancho, who cut inside but sent a swerving shot wide of the goal.
Despite their control of the game, Chelsea struggled to convert their chances, a deficiency that was exploited when Levi Colwill's careless pass was intercepted by the returning Jarrod Bowen, who calmly placed a low shot into the bottom corner.
Just before half-time, Alphonse Areola made a crucial fingertip save to deny Cole Palmer’s free-kick, allowing West Ham to head into the break with a lead.
Upon resuming, Chelsea appeared in need of renewed energy as West Ham began to apply pressure.
It took only seven minutes into the second half for Enzo Maresca to make substitutions, and by the 61st minute, he had made four changes in an effort to find a response.
These substitutions proved effective almost immediately, as Pedro Neto, scoring for the first time since November, initiated a sequence of events with a whipped cross that eventually returned to him via a deflection, allowing for an easy finish.
This goal seemed to invigorate the match, with Mohammed Kudus heading Bowen’s first-time cross against the post, although he was in an offside position.
Chelsea's significantly enhanced performance culminated in another goal, allowing the Blues to take the lead. This was made possible by an unfortunate deflection from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, which caused Palmer’s cross to loop over Areola into the net.
In the closing minutes, Chelsea had further opportunities to extend their lead. Areola was forced to intervene to prevent another own goal when Konstantinos Mavropanos directed a header towards his own net, shortly before Palmer narrowly missed with a well-placed shot.
Ultimately, these missed chances did not affect the outcome, as Tosin Adarabioyo successfully blocked a late attempt from Kudus, securing three points that propelled the Blues back into the top four. They have now lost only once in their last 17 home matches across all competitions (12 wins, 4 draws).
Conversely, this marks the Hammers' third consecutive defeat in Premier League head-to-head encounters for the first time since 2011, leaving them in 15th place, seven points behind the top half of the table.
