Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa: Blues thrash sorry Villans to go joint second

Chelsea solidified their position in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League with a commanding 3-0 win over Aston Villa, who now find themselves on an eight-match winless streak across all competitions following this defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Quick to establish dominance in West London, Enzo Maresca’s team took the lead in the seventh minute when Nicolas Jackson executed a precise left-footed shot past Emiliano Martínez at his near post.

Villa expressed their dissatisfaction regarding Marc Cucurella’s challenge on Jaden Philogene during the buildup to the goal, although the Spaniard appeared to have made contact with the ball first before assisting Jackson.

The Senegalese forward has now scored within the first ten minutes in four different Premier League matches this year, a feat unmatched by any other player.

This defeat marks another disappointment for Unai Emery’s squad, who could have equalized had Ollie Watkins chosen to pass to Morgan Rogers instead of directing a weak shot straight at Robert Sanchez.

The Villans appeared vulnerable, conceding a rare indirect free-kick when Pau Torres was penalized for a back pass to Martínez.

The Argentine goalkeeper managed to deny Cole Palmer from the ensuing set-piece but nearly made a critical error shortly after by passing the ball directly to Jackson, from whom he managed to recover.

Chelsea maintained their offensive pressure and extended their lead following a beautifully orchestrated move, with Enzo Fernandez skillfully controlling Palmer’s pass before delivering a precise right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Martínez visibly struggled as the first half drew to a close and was substituted by Robin Olsen, who had not played for the Villans since the final match of the previous season, where they suffered a 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace.

Initially, he appeared unfazed as Jackson sent a shot soaring over the crossbar after receiving a pass from Fernández.

However, in the 83rd minute, the Swede was forced to retrieve the ball from his net, unable to stop Palmer’s exceptional long-range effort from finding the back of the goal.

This goal was particularly noteworthy for Palmer, as it marked him as the second-fastest player to reach 30 Premier League goals for Chelsea, achieving this milestone in 46 matches—just five games more than Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who accomplished it in 41.

Maresca’s team managed to maintain their lead for the remainder of the second half, securing all three points and elevating themselves to third place in the standings.

The clean sheet is especially significant for the hosts, as it concludes a streak of six consecutive home matches in the top flight without a defensive shutout.

In contrast, Villa has now experienced five consecutive Premier League matches without a victory, leaving them in a disappointing 12th position as the new week begins.
