Chelsea 4-0 Southampton: Blues defeat sorry Saints to return to winning ways

Chelsea secured a commanding 4-0 victory in the Premier League against a struggling Southampton, further enhancing their impressive record against teams at the bottom of the table, achieving 12 wins in their last 15 encounters (D2, L1).

Following a 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town in their previous league match, Southampton aimed to achieve their first consecutive away wins in the Premier League since June 2020.

Despite Chelsea's recent lack of form, the opportunity for the struggling Saints seemed promising; however, by the time the half-time whistle sounded, the match was effectively beyond their reach.

Enzo Fernandez created two chances for Cole Palmer, who misfired on his initial attempt and then shot directly at Aaron Ramsdale, extending his goal drought in the Premier League to seven games.

Fortunately for Chelsea, the deadlock was broken shortly thereafter from a corner, as Tosin Adarabioyo’s header fell favorably for Christopher Nkunku to convert at the back post.

At the other end, Filip Jorgensen made a crucial save, deflecting Paul Onuachu’s header during one of Southampton's rare offensive forays.

Minutes later, Chelsea doubled their lead with a goal from Pedro Neto, who found the net after a well-timed underlapping run exploited Southampton's defense.

Maintaining their dominance, Chelsea scored a third goal before the interval, with Neto again playing a pivotal role by delivering a set-piece that allowed Levi Colwill to net his first goal of the season, coinciding with his upcoming birthday.

After the break, Chelsea continued to control the match, although Enzo Maresca’s team struggled to convert several opportunities that came their way.

Fernandez set up another chance for Nkunku, but the French forward was unable to direct his header on target.

Palmer, still searching for his scoring touch, sent a bouncing ball soaring over the bar, while Jadon Sancho’s clever turn created space for Neto, who unfortunately miscontrolled the ball in a promising position.

Ultimately, the hosts extended their lead with a fourth goal 12 minutes before the final whistle.

A rapid counter-attack culminated in substitute Tyrique George assisting Marc Cucurella, who scored decisively.

The late entry of 17-year-old Shim Mheuka marked a satisfying evening for Chelsea, who have temporarily reclaimed a position in the top four with this victory.

Having conceded nine goals to Chelsea in their two Premier League encounters this season, Southampton will be relieved to conclude their matches against them.

Their troubling goal difference has taken another blow; however, this is unlikely to alter their situation, as Ivan Juric’s team remains at the bottom of the table with just nine points, 13 points away from safety.
