Chelsea and Barcelona cruise to victory in Women’s Champions League

Chelsea produced a brilliant all-round display to thrash Paris FC 4–0 in their second UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage match on Wednesday night. The English champions were in control from the start, with Sandy Baltimore opening the scoring from the penalty spot. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Alyssa Thompson, and Erin Cuthbert all added goals as the London side showed their attacking strength and depth.

The win keeps Chelsea firmly in contention for top spot in their group as they look to build on last season’s semi-final run.

Barcelona too strong for Roma

Reigning European champions Barcelona made a clear statement of intent, sweeping aside Roma 4–0 in another dominant performance. Esmee Brugts opened the scoring within two minutes, setting the tone for a comfortable night at the Estadi Johan Cruyff. Kika Nazareth doubled the lead before captain Alexia Putellas — the two-time Ballon d’Or winner — converted from the penalty spot in the 71st minute.

Caroline Graham Hansen wrapped up the victory just before full-time to maintain Barcelona’s perfect start to the tournament. The Catalan side have now scored eight goals in their first two group games, underlining their attacking prowess as they chase a third continental crown.

Lyon and Wolfsburg secure key wins

Eight-time champions Lyon continued their impressive record in the competition with a 3–0 victory over Austria’s St. Pölten.

Germany’s Jule Brand and Lily Yohannes both netted their first goals for the club, either side of a strike from Ada Hegerberg, who extended her record as the all-time top scorer in UEFA women’s club competitions — now with 67 goals in 77 matches.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg earned a hard-fought 2–1 win away at Valerenga. Lineth Beerensteyn gave the German side an early lead, but Sara Horte quickly equalized for the hosts. In stoppage time, Janina Minge calmly converted a penalty in the 98th minute to secure all three points.

Late Drama in Leuven’s Victory

The final game of the night delivered late drama as Leuven edged Twente 2–1.

Twente looked set for a draw after Jaimy Ravensbergen’s goal was cancelled out by Linde Veefkind’s penalty in the 83rd minute. But deep into stoppage time, Sara Pusztai struck the winner, sparking wild celebrations for the Belgian side.

Tournament Format and What’s Next

For the first time, the Women’s Champions League features 18 teams in a new league-style format. Each team plays six matches against different opponents, with the top four advancing directly to the quarter-finals. Teams ranked fifth to twelfth will battle it out in play-offs for the remaining spots in the final eight.

With early frontrunners like Chelsea, Barcelona, and Lyon already showing their quality, this year’s competition promises to deliver another thrilling fight for European supremacy.
