Chelsea survive Wrexham scare to reach FA Cup Quarter-Finals

Chelsea secured their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a hard-fought 4–2 extra-time victory against Wrexham AFC in an entertaining contest at Stamford Bridge. The Premier League side were pushed to the limit by the ambitious Championship club, who twice took the lead during normal time before Chelsea’s depth and numerical advantage ultimately proved decisive.

Late strikes from Alejandro Garnacho and João Pedro ensured the Blues advanced after 120 minutes of intense football.

Wrexham strike first

Wrexham arrived in London with confidence and stunned the home crowd by opening the scoring in the 17th minute. A long pass from Callum Doyle caught Chelsea’s defence off guard, allowing Sam Smith to bring the ball under control before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.

The goal highlighted Wrexham’s attacking threat and immediately turned the tie into a tense encounter. Despite dominating possession, Chelsea struggled to break down the visitors’ disciplined defence during the first half.

Chelsea draw level in unusual fashion

Chelsea eventually equalised five minutes before halftime, though the goal arrived in chaotic fashion. A powerful effort from Alejandro Garnacho was cleared off the line by George Thomason, but the clearance rebounded off goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and into the net.

The fortunate goal restored parity and allowed Chelsea to regroup heading into the second half.

Wrexham retake lead before late Chelsea response

The match remained finely balanced after the break, with both sides creating chances. Wrexham regained the lead in the 78th minute when Josh Windass fired a shot from distance that was instinctively deflected past Sánchez by defender Callum Doyle.

The underdogs looked within touching distance of a famous FA Cup victory. However, Chelsea responded quickly. Just four minutes later, Josh Acheampong reacted fastest to a loose ball inside the penalty area and smashed a powerful effort into the roof of the net to make it 2–2.

Red Card changes the match

The key turning point came deep into stoppage time. Pedro Neto had already rattled the crossbar, signalling Chelsea’s growing momentum. Moments later, Wrexham midfielder George Dobson committed a high challenge on Garnacho.

Initially shown a yellow card, the decision was upgraded to a straight red after VAR review, forcing Wrexham to play extra time with ten players.

Garnacho and João Pedro finish the job

Chelsea capitalised on their numerical advantage early in extra time. In the 96th minute, midfielder Dário Essugo delivered a precise cross that Garnacho volleyed confidently past Okonkwo to give Chelsea the lead for the first time in the match.

Wrexham briefly thought they had equalised again when Lewis Brunt headed home following a flick from Kieffer Moore, but the goal was ruled out for offside. With the visitors stretched, Chelsea sealed the result in the 125th minute when João Pedro finished calmly after breaking through the defence.

Chelsea Extend Strong FA Cup Record

The victory also continues Chelsea’s impressive run in the competition. The London club has now won their last 25 FA Cup ties against lower-division opponents, a streak dating back to their shock defeat to Bradford City in 2015.

For Wrexham, the defeat was painful but respectable. The Welsh club pushed one of England’s biggest teams to the limit and demonstrated why their rapid rise through the football pyramid has captured global attention.
