Chelsea being rewarded for their patience, says Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino stated that Chelsea's recent strong performance, which has brought them close to European qualification, is a well-deserved outcome for the club's perseverance throughout a challenging season.
Pochettino's team emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Brighton on Wednesday, propelling them to sixth place in the Premier League standings with only one game remaining.
In the 34th minute, Cole Palmer scored his 22nd league goal of the season, giving his team the lead with a well-executed header.
Christopher Nkunku extended Chelsea's advantage in the 64th minute with a powerful strike, while Reece James of the Blues was later sent off for kicking Brighton's Joao Pedro.
Although Danny Welbeck managed to reduce the deficit in stoppage time, Chelsea held on to secure their fourth consecutive league victory, a feat they hadn't achieved since October 2022.
With Newcastle suffering a 3-2 defeat against Manchester United in their match, Chelsea surpassed them in the league standings.
If Chelsea can avoid defeat against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, or if Newcastle fails to win against Brentford, they will secure a spot in next season's Europa League.
Furthermore, if Chelsea triumphs over Bournemouth and Tottenham loses to Sheffield United, Chelsea could even finish in fifth place.
Pochettino's impressive turnaround has been met with criticism throughout his challenging first season in charge. Despite facing calls for his dismissal, he recently hinted at the possibility of leaving at the end of the season, stating that it wouldn't be the end of the world if chairman Todd Boehly decided to dismiss him.
However, with Chelsea closing in on European qualification, Pochettino expressed his satisfaction and praised the club's hierarchy for their unwavering support.
"We have seen improvements in both results and performances. We have emphasized the importance of patience, as building something takes time. Unfortunately, at a big club, it often appears as an excuse," he stated.
"The team's evolution is evident. We have continued to work hard and maintain a positive mindset. Finishing the season on a high note would be beneficial for the club."
Despite the consortium led by Boehly investing over £1 billion in new signings during their two-year tenure, Pochettino has been left with a young squad lacking experience, which has occasionally hindered their progress.
Nevertheless, Pochettino highlighted that the victory against Brighton demonstrated the team's commitment to fighting for the club's success.
The Premier League stands as the most challenging league globally. Immense recognition goes to the players, as we truly earned the triumph. This is why my elation knows no bounds. It grants us the opportunity to envision participating in European competitions in the upcoming season," expressed Pochettino.
"Our acquisition of three points positions us favorably in the standings, enabling us to approach the final match against Bournemouth with the prospect of securing a place in Europe."
