Chelsea Manager Enzo Maresca Confirms Filip Jorgensen as Club’s First-Choice Goalkeeper

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has officially confirmed that Filip Jorgensen is now the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Robert Sanchez in a crucial phase of the Premier League season.
Maresca’s Decision: Jorgensen Takes Over No. 1 Spot
The 22-year-old Danish goalkeeper was given his first Premier League start in the 2-1 victory over West Ham, signaling a shift in Chelsea’s goalkeeping hierarchy. Despite Sanchez returning for last week’s FA Cup loss to Brighton, Maresca made it clear that Jorgensen is his preferred option moving forward. “The idea is not to change the keeper game by game,”
Maresca stated in his pre-match press conference ahead of Chelsea’s league fixture against Brighton. “In this moment, the last Premier League game against West Ham that we won was Filip… the FA Cup game was Robert, but our keeper in this moment is Filip.”
Maresca also emphasized the decision was made to give Sanchez time to recover both mentally and physically, following a string of costly errors, including a misstep in Chelsea’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City last month.
Chelsea’s Premier League Campaign: Top-Four Push Continues
Chelsea, currently sitting in fourth place, were strong contenders earlier this season, just two points behind Liverpool in mid-December. However, inconsistent performances have seen them lose ground in the title race.
Despite setbacks in both domestic cups, Maresca remains confident in his squad’s progress: “Unfortunately, we are out of both domestic cups, but our journey in the Premier League has been fantastic until today,” he said. “In the Conference (League), we’ve been fantastic, and we’re going to try to finish in the best way we can.”
Chelsea’s Champions League Qualification Hopes
With Chelsea aiming to secure a Champions League spot after missing out in the last two seasons, Maresca sees their consistent presence in the top four as a sign of progress. “I said already many times, don’t forget that in the last two years, Chelsea has never been top four, and this year we spent almost our whole season in the top four,” Maresca noted. “This shows we are in the right direction. Now we’re going to fight to finish strong and bring Chelsea back to where it belongs—in the Champions League.”
Chelsea’s Upcoming Fixtures & Key Matches
Chelsea will look to solidify their top-four position in their upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton on Friday. With Filip Jorgensen now in goal, fans will be watching to see if the young goalkeeper can prove himself as Chelsea’s long-term No. 1.
