Chelsea manager Maresca reveals Fofana likely to be sidelined for the remainder of the season

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, aged 24, may miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury, as indicated by manager Enzo Maresca, 44, on Friday. The team is currently struggling in form without the presence of the French centre-back.
Fofana previously endured a challenging period, having missed the entirety of the 2023-24 season following anterior cruciate ligament surgery during pre-season. However, he made a strong start to the new season, becoming a crucial component of Maresca's defensive lineup.
He participated in every match he was available for until he sustained an injury against Aston Villa last month. His absence has coincided with Chelsea conceding goals, compounded by the sidelining of Benoit Badiashile.
"Regrettably, Wes will be out for an extended period, and Benoit is expected to be unavailable until at least February," Maresca informed reporters ahead of Saturday's London derby against Crystal Palace.
"Sadly, it is possible that Fofana could be out for the entire season. We are uncertain at this point, but he may miss a significant portion of it."
Maresca did, however, confirm that surgery is not currently required, while Reece James has returned to training after last playing in November.
"Reece is back from his last match and is in contention for some playing time, while Romeo Lavia is nearing his return and has begun training with us," Maresca added.
"We regard Romeo as a top player, but the priority is ensuring he is fit. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall remains unavailable."
At the beginning of December, Chelsea held second place, instilling hope among fans for a title challenge. However, a month later, they find themselves in fourth place, trailing league leaders Liverpool by 10 points, who also have a game in hand.
Maresca emphasized that he had previously tempered expectations regarding their title aspirations, stating that this season is focused on transition and team cohesion.
"I did not need to wait for losses to realize that Chelsea would not be title contenders," Maresca remarked. "I have stated multiple times that I do not believe anyone in this room anticipated us being in this position."
We are not fond of losing matches or dropping points; however, this will not hinder our progress. We understand that throughout the course of the season, losses are inevitable.
"Having skilled players is not sufficient for winning titles; additional elements are necessary. We are focusing on fostering unity and developing as a cohesive team, especially during challenging times."
Maresca also expressed uncertainty regarding Ben Chilwell's future at Stamford Bridge with the transfer window currently open. The English full-back has participated in only one substitute appearance in the League Cup this season.
"It is the January transfer window, and while some players may be on the verge of leaving, nothing is confirmed at this time," he stated.
