Chelsea shock Champions Liverpool with 3-1 win to keep top-five dream alive

Chelsea reignited their hopes of securing a top-five finish in the Premier League with a commanding 3-1 victory over newly crowned champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday evening.
The Blues, still battling for a UEFA Champions League (UCL) spot, delivered a high-intensity performance that exposed Liverpool’s complacency after clinching the title against Tottenham the previous weekend. Reds boss Arne Slot made six changes to the side that sealed the league, a decision that appeared to affect the visitors' rhythm.
Chelsea wasted no time asserting their intent. Just three minutes in, Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto combined brilliantly before Enzo Fernández slotted home from close range to give the hosts an early lead.

Minutes later, Noni Madueke had the chance to double Chelsea’s advantage when he opted to shoot rather than pass to Fernández, his effort drifting wide of the target.
Although Liverpool enjoyed extended periods of possession, they struggled to break down Chelsea’s well-organized defense. Goalkeeper Robert Sánchez remained largely untested throughout the first half, while Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal had little to do despite Chelsea’s occasional counterattacks.
After the restart, Chelsea continued to press forward, and their efforts paid off in the 54th minute. A dazzling solo run by Palmer down the right flank left Kostas Tsimikas trailing. His low cross deflected off Virgil van Dijk and ricocheted off teammate Jarrell Quansah into the back of the net for a cruel own goal.
Liverpool responded with urgency. Van Dijk narrowly missed a header, and substitute Darwin Núñez squandered a close-range opportunity, heading wide when unmarked. Mohamed Salah also came close, bending a shot just past the post.
Despite Chelsea’s attacking dominance, they missed chances to kill the game. Jadon Sancho forced a save from Alisson, and Palmer struck the post moments later.

The Reds finally pulled one back through Van Dijk, who powered home a header from a corner to set up a tense final stretch. Chelsea’s nerves were evident, but a late foul by Quansah on Moisés Caicedo gave Palmer the chance to seal the win from the penalty spot. The midfielder calmly converted in stoppage time, scoring his first goal since January.
The result puts Chelsea three points ahead of Nottingham Forest, albeit with an extra game played, as they prepare for a vital clash against Newcastle United at St. James' Park.
For Liverpool, the defeat is inconsequential in terms of the title race but a dent in momentum heading into their final two fixtures before a celebratory title parade in Merseyside.
