Chelsea vs Wolves - The first Premier League Christmas Eve match in 28 years

It is Christmas Eve in 1995 and Manchester United finds themselves in second place in the Premier League, trailing league leaders Newcastle United by a significant 10 points. Their next challenge takes them to Elland Road to face their bitter rivals Leeds, who are eager to dent United's title aspirations.

The atmosphere at Elland Road is electric, and within just seven minutes, the home side takes the lead. Gary McAllister expertly sends Peter Schmeichel the wrong way, causing the stadium to erupt in celebration.

However, the visitors manage to equalize before the half-hour mark. Nicky Butt's impressive high pressure forces a mistake, allowing him to set up Andy Cole for a well-taken goal.

The Leeds fans are not silenced for long, as Anthony Yeboah embarks on a brilliant run and slots the ball past the helpless Schmeichel. It is a goal worthy of the Premier League's greatness.

In the second half, Brian Deane's header secures a shocking victory for Leeds, leaving Manchester United still 10 points adrift of Newcastle as they head into the Christmas break.

Some may argue that this defeat serves as a wake-up call and catalyst for United to bounce back. They go on to defeat their title rivals, Newcastle, on Boxing Day and eventually clinch the title with a four-point lead.

Fast forward 28 years, and Wolves are set to host a struggling Chelsea side in the first Christmas Eve match since that memorable Premier League encounter. Chelsea has been plagued by injuries this season, much like many other Premier League clubs. However, a recent win against Sheffield United and a midweek victory over Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final have injected a glimmer of hope into their season.

Furthermore, the return of summer signing Christopher Nkunku from a lengthy injury adds to Chelsea's optimism. If they can secure a win against Wolves on Christmas Eve, the outlook for their season would not appear as bleak.

However, when the fixture date was announced, Pochettino expressed concerns that extended beyond footballing matters.

Christmas in Argentina, like in many countries, is celebrated on the night of Christmas Eve. However, Chelsea manager Pochettino expressed his concerns about him and his Argentine players and staff missing out on spending Christmas with their loved ones. In October, he acknowledged that it was a bit strange but emphasized the need to accept the rules of the Premier League and fulfill their obligations to play matches during the festive season.

In Argentina, the celebration begins at midnight on the 24th, whereas in England, it is on the 25th when families come together to celebrate. Pochettino acknowledged the differences and mentioned the need to see things from a different perspective. He understood that the fans might not be happy, but he believed that football was entering a new era where such decisions had to be accepted.

Pochettino also mentioned that the Premier League did not consult them before scheduling matches during the Christmas period. He expressed his willingness to share his opinion if asked, but currently, they were not involved in the decision-making process.

The Chelsea manager admitted that he was unsure about what to do with his wife during this time and expressed the need to find some ideas to compensate for missing out on Christmas celebrations.

The reality is that football is increasingly driven by commercial interests. While the Wolves vs Chelsea match on Sunday holds significance as a Premier League classic, it raises the question of when the welfare of players and coaching staff will be prioritized once again.
