Chelsea Women Secure League Cup with 2-1 Win Over Man City

Chelsea Women edged past Manchester City Women 2-1 in the FA Women’s League Cup final at Pride Park, marking Sonia Bompastor’s first trophy as Blues boss. A Mayra Ramirez opener, followed by a Yui Hasegawa own goal, handed Chelsea their third League Cup title, despite a strong performance from City.

Chelsea Take the Lead Despite City Dominance

Mayra Ramirez struck early in the 8th minute, finishing off a swift counter-attack to give Chelsea the advantage. Man City controlled possession for most of the first half but failed to capitalize on their dominance. Ramirez had a golden opportunity to double the lead but failed to convert after rounding Ayaka Yamashita.

Fujino’s Equalizer Not Enough as Hasegawa’s Own Goal Seals Chelsea’s Win

Aoba Fujino brought City level in the 64th minute, rifling a shot past Zecira Musovic as City pushed for victory. However, Yui Hasegawa’s misfortune in the closing stages handed Chelsea the win, slicing the ball into her own net after a cross from Ramirez. The victory gives Chelsea their third Women’s League Cup and Bompastor’s first silverware since taking charge.

Chelsea's Winning Mentality & City’s Motivation for Revenge

Chelsea captain Millie Bright: "We always find a way to win, whether it's a good day or a bad day. The mentality to never give in is in Chelsea’s DNA."
Sonia Bompastor: "We worked so hard for this moment. First trophy of the season, and it’s well deserved. But no celebrating—my players must be in bed by 9:30!"
Nick Cushing, Man City interim coach: "We did enough to win. The pain of this defeat must fuel us for the upcoming games against Chelsea."
