Chicago Bears turn their attention to Pete Carroll for vacant head coach position

The Chicago Bears have been denied the opportunity to interview Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy (61) and will instead conduct an interview with former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll (73) on Thursday.

The Bears submitted their request to interview McCarthy yesterday, but the Cowboys swiftly declined. Consequently, the Bears are now focusing on another Super Bowl-winning coach, Pete Carroll.

Carroll, who led the Seahawks for 14 seasons, holds the franchise record for the most career wins (137) by any coach in its history.

In addition to his Super Bowl victory in 2014, Carroll also secured two national championships during his time as head coach at USC, making him one of only three coaches in football history to achieve this feat.

The Bears dismissed former head coach Matt Eberflus the day after Thanksgiving following a contentious loss to the Detroit Lions, during which Eberflus failed to call a timeout that might have facilitated a game-winning drive. The Bears' record fell to 4-8 after that game, concluding the season at 5-12.

Under McCarthy, the Cowboys finished with a 7-10 record. He had previously guided the team to three consecutive 12-5 seasons following a 6-10 record in his inaugural year of 2020. During his tenure, Dallas has claimed two NFC East titles (2021, 2023) but has not made a Super Bowl appearance.

It appears that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is committed to McCarthy returning to Dallas for the upcoming season and potentially beyond. McCarthy remains under contract with the Cowboys until January 8th, with exclusive negotiating rights held by the team until January 14th.
