Chicago Fire edge Inter Miami in 5-3 thriller to clinch MLS Playoff spot

Chicago Fire booked their first MLS playoff appearance since 2017 with a dramatic 5-3 victory over Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday night.
The result sealed Gregg Berhalter’s successful return to club management, as the Fire overcame a spirited comeback from Luis Suárez to secure their postseason berth with two matches still to play.
First Half: Chicago Fire explode on the break
Chicago Fire came into the match well-prepared, frustrating Miami’s possession-heavy style and punishing them on the counterattack.
- 11’ – Ivorian midfielder Dje D’Avilla opened the scoring with a powerful header from a corner.
- 31’ – Jonathan Dean doubled the lead with a blistering breakaway goal.
- 39’ – Miami hit back through Tomas Avilés, briefly raising hopes of a turnaround.
- 45+1’ – On the stroke of halftime, Rominingue Kouame restored Chicago’s two-goal cushion with another counterattack finish, putting the Fire 3-1 up at the break.
Second Half: Suarez sparks Miami comeback
Uruguayan legend Luis Suárez almost single-handedly pulled Miami back into the contest:
- 57’ – He slotted home a low strike to make it 3-2.
- 74’ – A trademark curling finish from the edge of the box leveled the score at 3-3.
The home crowd roared Miami on, but fatigue from their sixth match in just 17 days began to show.
Chicago refused to fold under the pressure and delivered two late blows:
- 80’ – Justin Pledger Reynolds tapped in from close range after sloppy defending.
- 83’ – Brian Gutiérrez, one of MLS’s brightest young Americans, sealed the win with a thunderous long-range strike into the top corner.
The final whistle confirmed a 5-3 victory, ending Miami’s hopes of a comeback and sending Chicago into the playoffs for the first time in eight years.
Manager Reactions
Head coach Gregg Berhalter, dismissed from the USMNT job last year, was delighted with the milestone: “It was an objective of ours to reach the playoffs, and we’ve achieved it with two games left. But for us, it’s about continuing to build a strong team that can win.”
What’s Next
- Chicago Fire – Secure in the playoffs, they’ll aim to build momentum heading into the postseason.
- Inter Miami – Still in contention but under pressure, they need to rediscover form quickly after dropping points at home.
