Chimaev dominates du Plessis to capture UFC middleweight title at UFC 319

Khamzat Chimaev showcased his elite wrestling prowess to claim the UFC middleweight championship in dominant fashion, defeating defending champion Dricus du Plessis via unanimous decision at UFC 319 on Saturday night. The Chechen-born fighter utilized his superior grappling skills to control the South African throughout the entire contest.
The new champion established his dominance from the opening moments, immediately pursuing a takedown that brought the action to the canvas. Chimaev secured a crucifix position and unleashed a barrage of left-handed strikes, though du Plessis weathered the early storm without sustaining significant damage.
The second round followed a similar pattern as the 31-year-old wrestling specialist once again grounded his opponent. Chimaev maintained back control with relentless pressure, threatening with knee strikes and submission attempts while du Plessis struggled to mount any meaningful offense.
The championship rounds saw du Plessis in increasingly compromised positions as Chimaev's grappling advantage became more pronounced. The former champion appeared visibly fatigued as he found himself repeatedly controlled on the mat during the third and fourth rounds.
A momentary opportunity arose for du Plessis in the closing moments of the fifth round when he briefly escaped to a more advantageous position. However, the late surge proved insufficient to alter the outcome, and all three judges awarded Chimaev a decisive 50-44 victory on their scorecards.
Following his championship triumph, Chimaev reflected on his performance and showed respect for his defeated opponent. "I never game-plan. I just came in, work like I do in the gym. That guy is strong, I couldn't finish, respect that guy, he's the only champion who was saying my name. This guy has real heart, a real lion, a real African lion," Chimaev said, the new championship belt around his waist.
The former champion accepted the result graciously while vowing to reclaim his title in the future. "He deserves this 100 percent, he beat me fair and square tonight. He was the better man tonight, and I'll be back. I'll come and get my belt back, but for now, it's his and he deserves it, and he has to enjoy it," he said.
