Chinese GP Sprint Qualifying: Lando Norris takes sprint race pole from Lewis Hamilton

McLaren driver Lando Norris has claimed pole position for the sprint race of the Chinese Grand Prix, following a wet and chaotic qualifying session at the Shanghai International Circuit.
This means that Norris will start at the front of the grid, with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton alongside him in second place. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin will start in third position.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull, despite being a triple world champion, could only manage fourth place after encountering some difficulties during the final top 10 shootout.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari will line up in fifth place, followed by Sergio Perez of Red Bull in sixth. The home crowd erupted in jubilation when Zhou Guanyu, the hometown hero, secured a 10th-place qualifying position.
Oscar Piastri finished eighth in his McLaren, with Valtteri Bottas, Zhou's teammate, rounding out the top 10 in ninth place.
Initially, Hamilton had secured pole position for Saturday's race, but Norris snatched it away in the final seconds, only to have his lap time deleted.
However, moments later, it was reinstated, putting him back on provisional pole. Norris described the challenging conditions as "wild" but added that it was an enjoyable experience and he was pleased with his position for the upcoming race.
The sprint race on Saturday will be followed by another qualifying session to determine the starting grid for the 56-lap grand prix on Sunday, marking China's first Formula 1 race since 2019.
