Chris Gotterup stuns world number two Rory McIlroy to claim victory at the Scottish Open

Gotterup's impressive four-under-par round of 66 brought his total to 15 under, proving too challenging for McIlroy, who ended the tournament tied for second alongside England's Marco Penge. This marks Gotterup's second win on the PGA Tour, and he has also earned a place in next week's British Open at Royal Portrush.

"This is awesome," said Gotterup. It's all hitting me. It's just so cool.

I performed exceptionally well this week, and I anticipated that today would be challenging. I persevered like a champion and concluded it with flair. McIlroy is set to receive a hero's welcome during his homecoming in Northern Ireland next week, but he missed the opportunity to secure a victory for the first time since his Masters win in April.

Chris Gotterup began with the most unfavorable start, recording a bogey on the first hole, as the pressure of competing in the final group alongside the world number two became evident.

"Hitting it in the bunker on the first hole, I'm like, uh-oh, here we go," added Gotterup. "But I held it together really well and then it was so much fun out there."

He swiftly regained his composure by scoring birdies at the third, seventh, eighth, 10th, and 12th. A bogey at the 15th reduced his lead to a single shot; however, Gotterup promptly responded by making a birdie on the par-five 16th, whereas McIlroy had to accept a par.

"Chris played a great round of golf. He was so solid. After he got a couple ahead, I just couldn't claw back," said McIlroy. "It has been a great week. Missing the trophy, that's about it.

"There's no frustration, really. I'm really happy with where everything is. I feel like I've gotten out of this week everything, really, that I wanted."

Nicolai Hojgaard secured his place in the British Open by finishing tied for fourth with Matt Fitzpatrick at 12 under. World number one Scottie Scheffler, along with defending British Open champion Xander Schauffele, ended up sharing eighth place at nine under as they prepared their skills for the seaside links conditions in anticipation of the fourth and final major of the season.
