Chris Hughton fired as coach of Ghana following AFCON disaster

In a statement released by the country's football association, it was announced that Chris Hughton has been dismissed from his position as coach of Ghana. This decision comes after their elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations was officially confirmed.
Ghana secured third place in Group B at the tournament in the Ivory Coast following a 2-2 draw with Mozambique on Monday. However, their chances of progressing to the last 16 as one of the top four third-placed teams came to an end on Tuesday due to the results in Groups C and D.
In an official statement, the Ghana Football Association announced that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the senior national team, effective immediately. Additionally, the Executive Council has decided to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.
The Ghana Football Association has stated that they will soon provide a roadmap outlining the future direction for the Black Stars.
Hughton, whose father had Ghanaian roots, took on the role of coach in March, having previously served as a technical advisor to the team during the World Cup in Qatar.
Throughout his tenure, the 65-year-old former manager of Brighton and Newcastle United won four out of thirteen matches. He was already facing pressure heading into the Cup of Nations finals following a loss to the Comoros Islands in a World Cup qualifier in November.
During the Cup of Nations, Ghana suffered a defeat in their opening game against Cape Verde. To make matters worse, an enraged fan attempted to attack Hughton. They also recorded draws against Egypt and Mozambique, resulting in a meager two-point total.
Hughton's departure marks the second coaching change at the Cup of Nations, as Gambia's boss, Tom Saintfiet, resigned earlier on Tuesday after his team finished at the bottom of Group C.
