Chris Kirk climbs to register one-shot PGA Tour lead at The Sentry

In challenging windy conditions that caused scores to rise on the par-73 Plantation course, Kirk overcame an early bogey by sinking four consecutive birdies on the front nine. His impressive streak culminated with a 16-foot birdie putt at the eighth hole.
He continued his momentum by adding three more birdies at the 12th, 13th, and 14th holes, allowing him to claim a share of the lead. Kirk secured the solo lead with a birdie putt of less than a foot at the par-five 18th, finishing with a remarkable total of 21-under par, 198.
Kirk acknowledged the challenging start, stating, "The initial holes were quite difficult due to the wind direction and its strength. Despite the relatively calm winds we've experienced, today was quite breezy."
He further explained, "However, as I progressed to holes five, six, and seven, I found opportunities to take advantage of, and I played exceptionally well for the remainder of the round." Kirk, who ended an almost eight-year title drought by winning the Honda Classic last year, expressed his satisfaction with his performance.
Kirk attributed the wind as a contributing factor to his biggest mistake of the day, a tee shot that landed in the penalty area at the 15th hole. "Although I only slightly missed my target, the strong crosswind carried the ball over there," Kirk explained. Fortunately, he managed to salvage the situation by sinking a par-saving putt from off the green.
He concluded, "Making that putt after a successful run of birdies prior to that moment definitely helped maintain the momentum."
Bhatia showcased an exceptional performance, recording a flawless round with seven birdies to finish at seven-under 66 for a total of 199. His remarkable streak included three consecutive birdies from the fifth through the seventh hole, and a 12-foot birdie putt at the 13th briefly granted him the outright lead.
Although he managed to tie for the lead after sinking a 17-foot birdie putt at the 15th, Bhatia was unable to gain any further advantage, concluding his round with a disappointing three-putt par at the 18th hole.
Reflecting on his performance, the 21-year-old expressed his disappointment with the final hole but acknowledged that it was still a good day overall. This is Bhatia's first appearance at Kapalua, having secured his maiden title at the Barracuda Championship in July last year.
The prestigious season-opening event, boasting a purse of $20 million (£15.7 million) this year, is open to tournament winners from the previous season and the top 50 players from the FedEx Cup standings.
Bhatia credited his caddie's experience in navigating the unfamiliar course, relying on their guidance to determine when to attack and when to adopt a more conservative approach.
He emphasized the importance of making numerous birdies on this challenging course, highlighting the need to steadily navigate through it and gain comfort with specific aspects as he continues to play.
Former champion Jordan Spieth also delivered an impressive bogey-free round, carding six birdies to finish at six-under 67. He shares a total of 200 with Xander Schauffele and South Korean An Byeong-hun.
Schauffele's remarkable performance included nine birdies, resulting in an outstanding eight-under-par 65, while An recorded a solid 68.
World number one Scottie Scheffler, who held a one-shot lead overnight, posted a one-under 71, placing him in a group three shots behind the leaders at a total of 201. He is joined by Harris English (64), Sahith Theegala (68), and Australian Jason Day (67).
