Chris Wood on target as New Zealand defeat Tahiti in opening World Cup qualifier

Chris Wood (32) netted his 35th international goal as New Zealand commenced their pursuit of a place in the 2026 World Cup with a convincing 3-0 win over Tahiti in Group B of the second round of Oceania qualifying on Friday.

Since Australia transitioned to the Asian confederation in 2006, the All Whites have established themselves as the preeminent team in Oceania football. However, they have encountered difficulties in their last three attempts to qualify for the World Cup, falling short in intercontinental playoffs.

The expanded format of the 2026 tournament offers a direct qualification spot for the top team from Oceania, and New Zealand understands that securing five victories in the qualifying rounds will guarantee them a third appearance in the finals, following their participation in 1982 and 2010.

The journey that New Zealand aspires to undertake, leading them to filled stadiums in the United States, Canada, and Mexico in two years, began on Friday in front of a modest crowd, with many spectators seated on grassy banks in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

Winger Eli Just provided the All Whites with an ideal start, curling the ball into the net from the edge of the box just 90 seconds into the match at Freshwater Stadium.

Throughout the first half, Tahiti effectively organized their defense, frustrating the New Zealanders, who resorted to sending speculative passes aimed at their captain, Wood.

New Zealand's frustration persisted until the 67th minute, when substitute full-back Sam Sutton delivered a precise corner from the right, allowing Wood to direct the ball into the net from the edge of the six-yard box.

Wood exited the match shortly thereafter, and Ben Waine sealed the victory with a third goal just a minute before full-time, capitalizing on a miskick from teammate Matt Garbett and finishing adeptly from close range.

"We accomplished what we set out to do. We won the game and secured the three points," stated New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley. "Competing away from home in these conditions is challenging, but we navigated it quite safely."

The leading two teams from each of the two groups will advance to the third stage of qualifying, which consists of a four-team knockout tournament scheduled to take place in New Zealand next March. This tournament will determine which nation secures the automatic berth for the World Cup.

In the initial matches of Group A held in Suva on Thursday, Fiji narrowly defeated the Solomon Islands 1-0, with a precise goal from Roy Krishna, while New Caledonia triumphed over Papua New Guinea with a score of 3-1.
