Christian Streich steps down as Freiburg manager after over a decade

Christian Streich, the long-serving head coach of Freiburg, announced on Monday that he will be resigning from his position at the end of the season. Streich has been at the helm of the Bundesliga club for more than ten years, and his departure marks the end of an era for Freiburg.

Streich has dedicated a significant portion of his career to the club, starting as a player and later transitioning to a youth coach in 1995.

The 58-year-old assumed the role of head coach for the first team in 2011 and currently holds the title of the second-longest serving coach in the Bundesliga, following Frank Schmidt of Heidenheim.

Despite the recent Europa League elimination by West Ham, Streich expressed his intention to announce his future plans soon, emphasizing that the heavy second-leg defeat would not impact his decision.

Streich has opted to renew his contract through short-term agreements in recent years, demonstrating his commitment to the team.

Notably, he led Freiburg back to the Bundesliga after their relegation in 2014-15, securing the Bundesliga 2 title.

Streich's tenure has marked the most successful era in Freiburg's history, highlighted by their first-ever Europa League last 16 appearance in 2022-23 and a subsequent repeat this season.

Additionally, Freiburg reached the 2022 German Cup final under Streich's guidance, narrowly losing to RB Leipzig in a penalty shootout.

Despite receiving offers from larger-budget German clubs, Streich has remained loyal to Freiburg, earning a reputation as a beloved figure within the community.

Known for his advocacy on social issues, Streich has publicly condemned far-right extremism, urging Germans to take a stand against such ideologies.
