Christine Sinclair says goodbye in final international game

The 1-0 victory against Australia in British Columbia, Christine Sinclair's home province, was overshadowed by the celebration honoring Canada's most accomplished football player.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed gratitude on social media: "Thank you for inspiring us all. Your impact on the game and Canadian sports will be celebrated for years to come."

Despite often shying away from attention and valuing team success over personal feats, Sinclair took the spotlight during this tribute-filled evening in Vancouver. A guard of honor comprised of members from Canada's 2012 Olympic bronze medal team, alongside a touching tribute video, brought tears to her eyes.

In a stadium temporarily renamed in her honor, Sinclair, who announced her retirement in October, played a pivotal role in the sole goal of the match. Although substituted in the 58th minute, she left the field amidst hugs and a standing ovation, acknowledging the adoration of the crowd.

This event marked the conclusion of an illustrious career for one of Canada's most revered athletes. Reflecting on the night, Sinclair expressed immense joy and contentment, stating that winning in front of loved ones made it a perfect farewell.

Her legacy includes an impressive record of 190 goals in 331 matches for Canada, an Olympic gold medal in 2021, and appearances in six World Cups. Sinclair broke records, including surpassing Abby Wambach's international scoring record, and received numerous accolades, such as the Best FIFA Special Award for Outstanding Career Achievement in 2021 and being a 14-time Canadian women's player of the year.

While retiring from international play, Sinclair intends to continue playing for the Portland Thorns in the National Women's Soccer League in the upcoming season. Her impact on the game and her advocacy for equality ensure her legacy extends far beyond her playing days.
