Clara Tauson wins Auckland Classic after Naomi Osaka was forced to retire while leading

Naomi Osaka's pursuit of her first title in four years concluded in disappointment as the former world number one was forced to retire due to injury after securing the opening set of the Auckland Classic final against Denmark's Clara Tauson on Sunday.
The match ended in an anticlimactic manner, with Tauson expressing that her victory, marking her third WTA Tour title after a similar period without a win, did not overshadow what she considered her least favorable final performance.
"I must express my regret regarding this final. Naomi was showcasing exceptional tennis. I feel quite saddened by the events of today," Tauson remarked.
"Naturally, once I reflect on this, I will feel immense joy about my week. I am pleased to have won, but not entirely."
Osaka, who last claimed one of her four Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 2021, made her return to the circuit a year ago following an extended maternity leave. However, she faced challenges with consistency and concluded the season ranked outside the top 50.
In Auckland, she demonstrated her formidable skills, achieving a double break against Tauson with her powerful strokes in the opening set, which she won 6-4 despite a late service drop.
However, the 27-year-old from Japan was visibly emotional as she had an apparent abdominal issue assessed on the court before the second set commenced, ultimately leading her to withdraw, raising concerns about her fitness ahead of this month's Australian Open.
During the presentation ceremony, she appeared more upbeat, humorously suggesting that skipping breakfast might have contributed to her defeat.
"I want to extend my gratitude to everyone for welcoming me to this beautiful city; I truly enjoyed my time playing here," Osaka stated, refraining from elaborating on her injury.
"I sincerely apologize for how the match concluded, but I hope you appreciated the tennis we managed to play. I am just thankful to be here."
