Claudio Ranieri bows out in style as Roma defeat AC Milan 3-1 in emotional farewell

In a night filled with tears, triumph, and tribute, Claudio Ranieri guided AS Roma to an emotional 3-1 victory over AC Milan at the Stadio Olimpico in what was his final home game as Roma manager. The victory keeps Roma’s Champions League qualification hopes alive and cements Ranieri’s legendary status in the hearts of Giallorossi fans.

A Night to Remember at the Stadio Olimpico

On May 19, in Round 37 of the 2024/25 Serie A season, more than 68,100 fans packed the Stadio Olimpico, breaking attendance records and creating an electric atmosphere as they bid farewell to their beloved veteran coach. The crowd unveiled a massive mosaic with Ranieri’s name and the initials “ASR,” turning the stadium into a sea of red and yellow.

The players responded with passion and precision.

  • Gianluca Mancini opened the scoring in the 3rd minute.
  • Leandro Paredes doubled the lead in the 58th.
  • Bryan Cristante sealed the win with a late strike in the 87th.

Milan managed a consolation goal, but the night belonged to Ranieri and Roma.

Ranieri’s miraculous return sparks revival

The 74-year-old Ranieri returned mid-season when Roma were in disarray following José Mourinho’s departure to Fenerbahce. Interim coaches Daniele De Rossi and Ivan Juric couldn’t steady the ship, prompting the club to call on Ranieri to rescue their campaign.

And rescue it he did.

Since his return, Ranieri’s Roma went on a 19-match unbeaten run (14 wins, 5 draws), starting with a dominant 5-0 victory over Parma in December. Though the streak ended recently against Atalanta, the win over AC Milan demonstrated the team’s resilience and form under Ranieri’s leadership.

With 66 points (19W, 9D, 9L), Roma now sit 5th in Serie A. A win in the final game against Torino, combined with a Juventus slip-up, could still secure a Champions League spot.

A Farewell to Remember

After the match, Ranieri was visibly emotional. In his post-match interview, he said:

“The players believed in me from day one. I told them I couldn’t do this alone. But they followed, they fought, and they made this possible. I’m forever grateful.”

Regardless of the final standings, Ranieri’s impact is undeniable. He took over a struggling Roma side and turned them into European contenders again. The fans will never forget this final home win, and the love shown at the Olimpico was a testament to the enduring legacy of Claudio Ranieri.
