Claudio Ranieri steps down as Cagliari manager amid retirement reports

Claudio Ranieri is set to depart from his position as Cagliari coach through mutual agreement, as confirmed by the Serie A club on Tuesday. Reports from local media suggest that the 72-year-old is on the verge of retiring from football.

The decision comes after Cagliari secured another season in the topflight of Italian football with an away victory against Sassuolo last Sunday.

According to Sky Sports Italia, Cagliari will mark Ranieri's final coaching role, as he has opted to retire from the sport.

Ranieri, who previously managed Cagliari in 1988, had one year left on his contract after taking charge of the team last season and guiding them to promotion from Serie B.

In a statement, Cagliari expressed their gratitude towards Mister Ranieri, highlighting his ability to consistently achieve the team's goals during his two spells with the club.

The veteran coach will oversee his last match with Cagliari on Thursday as they face Fiorentina in their final game of the season.

Renowned for leading Leicester City to an unexpected Premier League title in 2016, Ranieri has also managed top clubs like Juventus, AS Roma, and Inter Milan in Serie A, as well as Chelsea, Fulham, and Watford in the English Premier League.

In a video shared on Cagliari's social media, Ranieri explained his decision to step down, stating that although it was a difficult choice, he believes it is the right time to do so.
