Club Brugge 1-3 Aston Villa: Late penalty seals win for Villans in Champions League last-16 first leg

Aston Villa took a significant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals with a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in the first leg of their last-16 clash in Belgium on Tuesday. An early goal from Leon Bailey set the tone, but the hosts equalized through Maxim De Cuyper. However, a late own goal by Brandon Mechele and a penalty converted by Marco Asensio in the closing minutes sealed the win for Villa.

The two sides will meet again at Villa Park next Wednesday to determine who advances to face either Liverpool or Paris Saint-Germain in the next round. Despite the victory, Villa manager Unai Emery remained cautious about his team’s position. "I am happy, but calm. There are still 90 minutes to play," he told reporters. "We are not in the quarter-final. I know how difficult each match is and how it can change."

Brugge, who had previously edged Villa 1-0 in the group stage, found themselves on the back foot early on. A well-placed free kick from Youri Tielemans saw Tyrone Mings head the ball back into the box, where Bailey struck a precise side-footed half-volley into the bottom corner. However, Brugge responded quickly as Christos Tzolis controlled a long ball inside the area before setting up De Cuyper, whose low shot beat Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The first half saw few clear-cut chances beyond a well-saved effort from Chemsdine Talbi, and the second half initially lacked intensity. Sensing an opportunity to shift momentum, Emery made four substitutions just after the hour mark. "I made four changes to get fresh legs, but to keep the same game plan," he explained. "I am really happy how they responded."

One of those substitutes, Asensio, nearly put Villa ahead with a powerful shot that was denied by Brugge’s Simon Mignolet, while Matty Cash sent the rebound over the bar. Moments later, Brugge almost capitalized on a counterattack, but Hans Vanaken’s header went wide, and Tzolis missed a golden opportunity to score when he fired over the crossbar with only the keeper to beat.

Just as the game seemed destined for a draw, Brugge unraveled in the final moments. A low cross from Morgan Rogers forced Mechele into an own goal while attempting to clear. Minutes later, Tzolis fouled Cash in the box, allowing Asensio to step up and score his fifth goal in seven games since joining on loan from PSG, giving Villa a two-goal cushion.

Brugge manager Nicky Hayen summed up his team's frustration, telling his players after the final whistle, "The way we played was good again. The only thing we can blame is that we gave the goals away ourselves."

With a commanding advantage, Villa will now look to finish the job at home as they aim for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
