Club Brugge 2-1 Atalanta: Nillson scores controversial penalty in injury time to hand hosts slender first-leg lead

Club Brugge secured a dramatic victory over Atalanta B.C. with a last-minute penalty, winning 2-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie, thereby positioning themselves favorably for the return match in Italy next week.
In this encounter, the lower-seeded team hosted the higher-seeded one, yet it was Brugge who dominated the initial exchanges.
Greek international Christos Tzolis tested Atalanta's goalkeeper Rui Patricio on two occasions within the first ten minutes, though these attempts served only as warnings that went unheeded by La Dea.
At the 15-minute mark, Stefan Posch displayed a lack of urgency in receiving a pass from Isak Hien, allowing Chemsdine Talbi to intercept the ball. Talbi then set up Ferran Jutgla, who finished decisively, breaking his nine-match goal drought and putting Brugge ahead.
The UEFA Europa League champions struggled to establish control at the lively Jan Breydel Stadion, with home captain Hans Vanaken seeing his shot deflected just wide following a free-kick from Maxim De Cuyper.
Nicky Hayen’s team effectively contained one of Europe’s most potent attacks for the first 40 minutes, but the head coach would have been disheartened by the manner in which Atalanta equalized just before halftime.
Davide Zappacosta was afforded too much space to deliver a cross from the left, finding the unmarked Mario Pasalic, who deftly flicked the ball into the net with a header.
The second half commenced similarly to the first, with Brugge pressing forward while Atalanta occasionally appeared unsettled.
Nevertheless, the Blau-Zwart struggled to create significant chances against Patrício. Their lack of offensive creativity nearly proved costly when Gian Piero Gasperini’s side came close to completing a comeback midway through the second half.
Initially, Juan Cuadrado's deep cross found Zappacosta, but Simon Mignolet was quick to intervene. Shortly thereafter, substitute Lazar Samardžić had a prime opportunity when he faced the Brugge goalkeeper one-on-one; however, he lost his composure and sent his shot wide of the target.
Charles De Ketelaere, a local talent from the Brugge academy, had remained relatively subdued until he combined effectively with Samardžić in the final ten minutes, forcing Mignolet into a save from the edge of the penalty area.
Both teams pressed forward in search of a decisive goal, and it was the Belgian side that was presented with a chance to take the lead by referee Halil Umut Meler during stoppage time.
Hien was left bewildered when Meler awarded a penalty after the defender's hand made contact with his compatriot Gustaf Nilsson. The forward then composed himself and successfully converted the penalty, sending Patricio the wrong way.
As a result, Atalanta has now secured only one victory in their last five matches across all competitions, indicating that they have significant challenges ahead on their home ground if they aspire to reach the last 16.
