Club Brugge cruise past PAOK and into Conference League semi-finals

Club Brugge successfully resisted any attempts by PAOK to stage a comeback and emerged victorious with a 2-0 win (3-0 on aggregate), securing their spot in the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

In their quest to silence the boisterous home crowd, the Belgian team squandered a golden opportunity early on when Ferran Jutgla found himself in a clear run towards the goal, with only the goalkeeper to beat. However, he inexplicably opted to pass the ball, inadvertently gifting it to the grateful home defense.

Jutgla missed another significant chance when Michal Skoras delivered a precise cross to him at the far post. Nonetheless, his persistence paid off just after the thirty-minute mark.

Kyriani Sabbe sprinted down the right flank and delivered a perfectly placed cross that teased PAOK goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski, who couldn't quite reach it. This allowed Jutgla to easily tap the ball into the empty net, securing his first-ever European goal.

The opening goal dampened the spirits of the home crowd, and just before halftime, an eerie silence fell over Toumba Stadium as a VAR check took over three minutes to make a decision regarding an offside call.

During the build-up to the goal, Skoras broke free and saw his shot parried into Jutgla's path, who then smashed it into the net. Eventually, the goal was awarded, giving Club Brugge a 3-0 lead in the tie and firmly placing them on track for a glamorous semi-final clash against Fiorentina.

The hosts struggled to regain momentum immediately after halftime, and their hopes were briefly reignited just after the hour mark when Kiril Despodov was brought down by Eder Alvarez Balanta in the penalty area.

However, another VAR review revealed that Despodov was offside in the build-up, effectively extinguishing PAOK's fleeting hopes of mounting a comeback.

In the final minutes of the game, the pace slowed down significantly as the hosts appeared defeated, and Brugge was content to maintain possession and manage the game.

Although PAOK dominated possession, their crosses from the wide areas failed to challenge the Brugge defense, allowing Nicky Hayen's side to comfortably secure their place in the semi-finals.
