Coco Gauff crushes Anca Todoni to reach Wimbledon third round

Coco Gauff (20) struggled to find her best form under the roof on Wimbledon's Court One on Wednesday, but she maintained control throughout a second-round 6-2, 6-1 win over Romanian qualifier Anca Todoni (19).

The US Open champion faced challenges on the slick court, slipping and falling twice, and expressed frustration during the one-hour six-minute match against an opponent ranked 140 places below her.

"I believe I could have played better at certain points, but overall I'm pleased to have advanced to the third round," Gauff stated in a court interview.

Despite being the second seed and a fan favorite at Wimbledon, Gauff made 16 unforced errors and landed only 43% of her first serves. However, her nervous opponent, who is six months younger than Gauff, committed 23 unforced errors and struggled to find her rhythm against the agile American. Gauff sealed the match with a drop shot that Todoni was unable to return.

Reflecting on her experiences, Gauff mentioned that she has learned to manage expectations and emotions following her disappointing first-round exit last year and her U.S. Open victory.

"The overall experience has taught me a lot about life. I'm very passionate about what I do, but it's important to remember that it's just a game, just a sport. Sometimes the world can make you feel like there's immense pressure and expectation," she said.

Following the withdrawals of Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka, Gauff's path in the draw has become more favorable. She is set to face either British qualifier Sonay Kartel or France's Clara Burel in the next round.
