Coco Gauff holds off Andreeva in thrilling tiebreak to return to Rome semi-finals

Coco Gauff showcased nerves of steel and elite-level experience on Wednesday, overcoming the relentless challenge of Mirra Andreeva to secure a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory and book her place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Internazionali BNL d’Italia (IBI25).

In what was their fourth meeting on the WTA Tour, the 21-year-old American maintained her perfect head-to-head record against Andreeva, now 4-0, and improved to an outstanding 11-1 record against younger opponents. The win marks Gauff’s third career semi-final appearance in Rome, cementing her status as one of the most consistent young performers on clay.

Tension-Filled Clash of Rising Titans

Facing the 18-year-old Andreeva — who has had a breakout year after back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells — Gauff drew on her experience and tactical adaptability to edge out a match brimming with momentum swings, long rallies, and emotional outbursts.

The first set was tightly contested until Gauff, capitalizing on a crucial break, edged ahead 4-3 when Andreeva faltered at the net. Though the Russian broke back with determination, her composure slipped under Gauff’s persistent pressure, resulting in a second forehand error that handed Gauff the set 6-4.

The second set saw four service breaks in the first six games, a testament to both players’ aggressive returns and court coverage. Eventually, both players found a serving rhythm, setting up a dramatic tiebreak. Gauff’s subtle forehand slice gave her a 4-3 edge, but Andreeva answered with a stunning drop shot that leveled the score at 5-all. In the end, two untimely backhand errors from Andreeva allowed Gauff to seal the set and the match.

“At the end, my defense — it was tough,” Gauff admitted. “We were both tight in the tiebreak, and it came down to who could make the last ball. Some points weren’t my best, but I managed to get through.”

Gauff Embraces Pressure, Eyes First Rome Final

Gauff, who will officially rise to World No. 2 in the PIF WTA Rankings next week, is embracing the pressure that comes with her growing stature. Aware of the comparisons between herself and today’s teenage prodigies, she remains focused on growth rather than accolades.

“When you’re winning and still feel like there’s a lot to improve, it motivates you,” she said. “I’ve lost in the semis here before, so hopefully I can break that wall this time.”

Remarkably, Gauff becomes Rome’s youngest three-time semi-finalist since the legendary Martina Hingis in 1999, and ranks fifth among the youngest players in the Open Era to reach three Rome final fours — following only Monica Seles, Hingis, Gabriela Sabatini, and Chris Evert.

Semi-Final Showdown Set: Gauff vs Zheng

Gauff will now face Zheng Qinwen, the in-form Chinese star who stunned World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets earlier in the tournament. The semifinal promises a fascinating duel between two dynamic, top-five talents, each carrying tremendous momentum into the final stretch before Roland Garros 2025.

The other semi-final will see Italy’s Jasmine Paolini go up against rising American Peyton Stearns, guaranteeing high-octane clay court action across the board.

“She [Zheng] played a great match to beat Sabalenka,” Gauff acknowledged. “It’ll be tough, but I’m ready for the challenge.”

Andreeva’s Rise Continues Despite Setback

Despite the loss, Mirra Andreeva remains one of the most exciting prospects on the WTA Tour. Now ranked World No. 6, the Russian teen has shown her mettle by defeating top-ranked players and lifting major titles this season. Her frustration during the match — including a racquet toss after an error-ridden rally — reflected the competitive fire that has fueled her meteoric rise.

“She tried to be more aggressive today,” Gauff observed. “When you play someone back-to-back, it’s always tricky. You have to expect them to change it up.”

Though this marks Gauff’s eighth consecutive set won against Andreeva, their rivalry is still in its early chapters. With both players among the youngest in the WTA Top 10, their careers are likely to remain intertwined for the next decade.
