Coco Gauff mounts comeback to defeat Belinda Bencic and advance to Australian Open quarter-finals

Coco Gauff showcased her resilience as she rallied from a set down to defeat Belinda Bencic 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday, securing her spot in the Australian Open quarterfinals. The victory extends Gauff's unbeaten start to the season to nine matches.
Swiss player Bencic, returning to the tour after having a child and ranked 294th, displayed her knack for challenging top players. She claimed the first set in sunny conditions on Rod Laver Arena, proving why she has previously triumphed in seven of her eight matches against Grand Slam champions.
Gauff Turns the Tide
Despite losing her first set of the year, Gauff, the American third seed and 2023 U.S. Open champion, found her rhythm in the second set. Adopting a more aggressive approach, she leveled the match at one set apiece.
The deciding set saw Gauff withstand early pressure from Bencic, including saving break points in the opening game. Gauff broke for a 3-1 lead after a pair of unlucky net cords left Bencic visibly deflated. Gauff capitalized on the momentum, reeling off the final three games to claim victory and book a quarterfinal clash with Spain's Paula Badosa.
Post-Match Reflections
"I thought in the first set she played great tennis; it was tough for me to be more on offense," the 20-year-old Gauff admitted. "Overall, I'm happy with how I played. The first set could have gone my way with a few more points. I played more aggressively in the second set and reset to play my best in the third."
While Gauff’s determination shone through, she will look to improve certain aspects of her game. She tallied nine double faults, 45 unforced errors, and a second-serve success rate of around 40%. Still, she remains focused on surpassing last year’s semifinal run in Melbourne.
Hard Work and Growth
Reflecting on her progress, Gauff credited her offseason preparation and mental growth. "We worked very hard in the offseason. Obviously, there’s still a lot for me to accomplish my goal," she said.
She also highlighted her increased mental toughness: "Maybe a couple of years ago, if I lost the first set, I might lose the match. I remember my dad said, ‘We’ve got to toughen you up.’"
With her eyes set on the semifinals and beyond, Gauff continues to prove her mettle on the Grand Slam stage.
