Collins eliminated from Australian Open by fellow American Keys amid boos

Danielle Collins (31) encountered a mix of boos as she entered and exited the arena following her defeat to fellow American Madison Keys (29) with a score of 6-4, 6-4 at the Australian Open on Saturday.

Collins had previously assumed the role of the antagonist at Melbourne Park on Thursday when she sarcastically expressed gratitude to hecklers for "paying my bills" after her victory over local favorite Destanee Aiava in the second round.

She further engaged the crowd by blowing kisses, cupping her ear, and even gesturing towards her backside.

"Every individual who has purchased a ticket to come here and heckle me or engage in their antics is contributing to the Danielle Collins Fund," she remarked.

As she made her entrance at Rod Laver Arena for her third-round match against the 19th seed Keys, Collins was met with a mixed reception, smiling despite the circumstances.

Cheers erupted when the 10th-seeded Collins committed her first double fault.

At the conclusion of the first set, the chair umpire reminded the audience to show respect for both competitors.

Collins called for a medical timeout while trailing 4-3 in the second set, receiving significant strapping on her left knee.

By the end of the match, the half-filled stadium was largely supportive of both players, although Collins faced additional boos as she departed.

The 2022 finalist reflected on her experience, stating, "I take pride in the fact that I have reached a point where I no longer concern myself with the opinions of those who do not matter to me."

She reiterated her belief that all publicity is beneficial.

"Clearly, I am nearing the end of my career. It is fantastic that I can take advantage of these opportunities," she noted.

"I believe that six different sponsorship opportunities have arisen during this tournament alone.

"That is a positive indication for me. As I mentioned, every fan plays a role in that.

"It is truly a blessing."

On Thursday, Collins provoked her critics by announcing that the prize money she earned in Melbourne would be allocated for a luxurious vacation with friends in the Bahamas.

When questioned on Saturday about whether she had made arrangements for the trip following her loss, she responded to reporters, "I need to find a few days to fit that in. Yes, we will see how it unfolds. I will certainly keep you all informed."

"I will make sure to share pictures with everyone."
