Collins plays villain role after defeating local favorite Aiava in Melbourne

Danielle Collins, aged 31, delivered a pointed response to the unfriendly crowd following her victory over local favorite Destanee Aiava, 24, in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday.
She blew kisses to the booing spectators and expressed her gratitude for their contribution to her upcoming luxurious vacation.
The 10th-seeded American remarked that the crowd's energy at Kia Arena invigorated her during a challenging phase of the match, ultimately leading her to triumph over the 195th-ranked Australian with a score of 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2.
"I believe they were quite eager for her to win," Collins stated to the media. "There were numerous individuals who seemed overly intoxicated and struggled to contain their excitement."
She further commented, "All I can say is good luck trying to unsettle someone who truly remains unfazed," after substituting her initial diplomatic tone with a few choice words.
Having lost to local Ash Barty in the 2022 Australian Open final, Collins expressed her enjoyment of the sometimes charged atmosphere generated by the crowd's partisanship.
"I relished it. This has been my life’s work. I thrive in an environment filled with energy, regardless of which side it favors," she noted.
"For me, it serves as additional motivation, particularly when my performance is not at its peak. If I am going to endure two-and-a-half hours with this audience, I might as well enjoy the larger paycheck that comes with it. I was genuinely pleased to do so."
Collins is set to receive A$290,000 (approximately $179,800) for advancing to the third round of the Grand Slam and indicated that she has specific plans for her earnings.
"One of the most remarkable aspects of being a professional athlete is that those who dislike you and even hate you are the ones who help pay your bills. It’s quite an interesting notion," she remarked.
"My friends and I have a penchant for five-star vacations. I can assure you that this check will be allocated towards our next luxurious trip, hopefully to The Bahamas," she concluded.
We have a strong affinity for large vessels, particularly yachts. We will share updates regarding our experiences with them.
The victory established a third-round matchup against 19th-seeded fellow American Madison Keys, a friendship that dates back to their days as penpals at the age of ten.
"We have a long history together and are close friends," she remarked. "It is quite remarkable to transition from competing in the 10-and-under and 12-and-under categories to playing on one of the most prestigious stages globally."
