Colombia defeat Costa Rica 3-0 to secure quarter-final spot

Colombia secured their place in the Copa América quarter-finals with a dominant 3-0 win over Costa Rica, marking their tenth consecutive victory.

Colombia showed their determination to advance to the quarterfinals early in the match. Just over five minutes in, Luis Diaz missed a golden opportunity to score, heading Richard Ríos' cross over the bar from close range.

Costa Rica faced an uphill battle as underdogs, and their task became even more challenging when Patrick Sequeira fouled Jhon Cordoba in the box, leading to a penalty converted by Diaz to give Colombia the lead.

Despite Diaz's continued threat, Costa Rica managed to hold on defensively, with Orlando Galo making a crucial block to deny Diaz a goal just before halftime.

Colombia extended their lead in the second half, with Davinson Sanchez heading in a corner from Jhon Arias. The third goal came shortly after, with James Rodriguez providing an assist for Cordoba to score his first competitive international goal.

With a three-goal deficit, Costa Rica faced an insurmountable challenge, ultimately falling to Colombia in a convincing victory.

Colombia took full command following the third goal, and their comfortable advantage enabled them to rotate players and give playing time to fringe members of the squad.

Despite still having one more group match against Brazil, their advancement secured, manager Nestor Lorenzo might opt to rest key players in preparation for the knockout rounds.

Costa Rica, on the other hand, is in a dire situation with only one point, facing the imminent risk of elimination in the group stage for the second consecutive Copa América tournament.
