Colombia stunt brief Paraguay comeback to claim Copa América victory

Colombia commenced their Copa América 2024 campaign with a 2-1 triumph over Paraguay in Houston, Texas, securing their ninth consecutive victory and extending their unbeaten streak to over two years.

Entering the group stage opener in exceptional form, Colombia had won 18 out of their last 23 matches. They displayed their dominance early on with an energetic press that allowed them to win the ball in the Paraguay half. Richard Rios attempted a long-range shot, but narrowly missed the target.

However, Paraguay was not willing to surrender to the Colombians. In their pursuit of a first-ever victory against Colombia in six meetings, Julio Enciso unleashed a powerful free kick towards goal, but Camilo Vargas managed to make a crucial save at his near post.

From that point onwards, Colombia took control of the match. They scored twice before halftime, thanks to two exceptional assists from James Rodriguez. The first goal came when Rodriguez delivered a perfectly placed cross into the box, allowing Daniel Munoz to head the ball into the net. In the 42nd minute, Rodriguez's Crystal Palace teammate, Jefferson Lerma, also found the back of the net with a header from a floated free kick.

Paraguay's coach, Daniel Garnero, would have been pleased with his team's improved performance in the second half. Despite their increased effort and energy, they struggled to deliver the final decisive pass, while Colombia's defense effectively nullified their attacks.

On the other hand, Colombia continued to threaten on the counterattack, with Luis Diaz coming close to scoring with a powerful shot that narrowly missed the target. As the second half progressed, Paraguay's frustration grew, leading them to resort to long-range shots. One of these attempts forced Vargas to make a save after Matías Espinoza unleashed a powerful strike from distance.

Nevertheless, Paraguay persisted in probing their opponents, and their perseverance paid off when the Colombian defense momentarily switched off. Ramon Sosa delivered a precise ball to the back post, and Enciso capitalized on the opportunity to score.

Overall, Colombia's victory in their Copa América opener showcased their impressive form and solid defense, while Paraguay demonstrated resilience despite the defeat.

Despite managing to score a goal, their attempt to stage a comeback fell short as Colombia confidently secured the victory, even though they were denied a late penalty by VAR.

Colombia has made an excellent start in their quest for a second-ever Copa América triumph, while Paraguay faces a challenging task ahead with their upcoming match against Brazil. On the other hand, Colombia will be facing Costa Rica in their next encounter.
