Court of Arbitration for Sport dismisses Russia's appeal against IOC ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Friday that it has rejected Russia's appeal regarding the International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspension for acknowledging regional organizations from territories annexed from Ukraine.

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) was banned by the IOC in October due to its recognition of regional Olympic councils in Ukrainian territories that are occupied by Russia, namely Luhansk,

Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. This action was deemed a violation of the Olympic Charter as it undermined the territorial integrity of Ukraine's National Olympic Committee (NOC).

Russia, which refers to its invasion of Ukraine as a 'special operation', has criticized the ban, claiming it to be politically motivated.

The ROC appealed the ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, requesting its revocation and the recognition of the ROC as a fully-fledged NOC with all associated privileges.

However, the CAS Panel responsible for the case rejected the appeal and upheld the original decision, stating that the IOC Executive Board had not violated the principles of legality, equality, predictability, or proportionality.

Initially, Russian and Belarusian athletes were prohibited from participating in international competitions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Belarus being used as a staging ground.

However, the IOC later issued recommendations allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as individuals without national symbols.

The IOC has emphasized that athletes should not be penalized for the actions of their respective governments.
