Courtois announces he will not play for Belgium under Tedesco's management

Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, announced on Thursday his decision to step away from the Belgium national team while Domenico Tedesco remains as head coach.

Courtois, who is often considered among the elite goalkeepers globally, was omitted from the Belgium squad for the European Championship after a disagreement with Tedesco last year, leading to Koen Casteels taking his place for the tournament.

In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Courtois expressed, "It has been a privilege to don the national jersey. I never imagined I would have the opportunity to represent my country over 100 times."

He continued, "Regrettably, due to the circumstances involving the coach and after considerable contemplation, I have resolved not to return to the Belgian national team under his leadership."

Courtois acknowledged his part in the situation, stating, "While I accept my share of responsibility, I believe that my lack of confidence in him would hinder the necessary atmosphere of goodwill moving forward."

Despite having recovered from an injury in time to assist Real Madrid in securing the Champions League title in June, he noted that the Belgian Football Association has recognized his stance and the rationale behind his decision.

"I regret any disappointment this may cause among fans, but I firmly believe this is the most prudent decision for Belgium, as it resolves ongoing discussions and allows the team to concentrate on its objectives. I appreciate your steadfast support, love, and understanding," Courtois concluded.

Questions regarding Tedesco's tactics arose after Belgium's exit from the Euros at the hands of France in the round of 16.

The Italian-born German coach commenced his role in February 2023 and had signed a contract extension prior to the Euros. However, the team, which had been ranked at the top of the world for nearly three years and reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, has experienced lackluster results under his guidance.
